About the book:

Sophie Frangos is torn between the love of two men and the promise that binds them all together. Markos Stavros loves Sophie from afar while battling his thirst for vengeance and his hunger for honor. Dino, his quiet and intelligent brother, simply wants to forget the horror that drove them from their Greek island home to start a new life in America. One of these sons of thunder offers a future she longs for, the other the past she lost. From the sultry Chicago jazz clubs of the roaring twenties to the World War II battlefields of Europe to a final showdown in a Greek island village, they’ll discover betrayal, sacrifice and finally redemption. Most of all, when Sophie is forced to make her choice, she’ll learn that God honors the promises made by the Sons of Thunder.

My Review:

Two brothers sharing a terrible past, faced with different views of the future, and both yearning for the same woman is just the beginning of Susan May Warren’s epic Brother In Arms novel, Sons of Thunder is a deeply heart-wrenching and astonishingly beautiful novel filled with tragedy, betrayal, love, hope and redemption. Markos and Dinos Stavros are being sent to America in the aftermath of their brother Theo’s tragic wedding reception. Their mother has chosen to stay behind in Greece and live with Theo’s widower Zoë on Ramone Island. Meanwhile, for their safety, Markos and his younger brother Dino must be sent off to America to live with their uncle in Chicago. Faius Frangos and Sophia escort the boys to America. Once in America Markos and Dino desperately try to put the past behind them. Markos, Dinos and Sophia capture the readers heart in Susan May Warren’s Sons of Thunder . Warren’s novel is so achingly beautiful and masterfully written one cannot help but read from cover to cover without end. I sincerely enjoyed reading the three-part epic novel, Sons of Thunder, the lives of the characters, the lessons this story has taught as well as astonishingly vivid prose. I cannot praise Warren’s Sons of Thunder enough and strongly recommend it to anyone who enjoys a beautiful, suspense-filled romance in a time long past.

From the Publisher:

It’s not fair to say that trouble happens every time PJ Sugar is around, but it feels that way when she returns to her home town, looking for a fresh start. Within a week, her former teacher is murdered and her best friend’s husband is arrested as the number-one suspect. Although the police detective investigating the murder—who also happens to be PJ’s former flame—is convinced it’s an open-and-shut case, PJ’s not so sure. She begins digging for clues in an effort to clear her friend’s husband and ends up reigniting old passions, uncovering an international conspiracy, and solving a murder along the way. She also discovers that maybe God can use a woman who never seems to get it right.

My Review:

Nothing But Trouble is the first book in Susan May Warren’s PJ Sugar series. The reader is introduced to fun and quirky PJ Sugar who is finally returning home to Kellogg, Minnesota after being run out of town on her graduation day. Her homecoming is about as PJ expects, except running into her old boyfriend who is now a police officer, part of the reason she was run out of town. To make matters worse, PJ is left to care for her 4-year-old nephew, whom she has never met, while her sister goes off on her honeymoon, what could possibly go wrong in two short weeks? The reader is soon introduced to the quirky inhabitants of this charming small town and trouble seems to follow PJ wherever she goes. When her best friend’s husband is arrested for murder PJ decides to do some digging around on her own to uncover the identity of the true murderer. PJ Sugar is a loveable and rather sharp-witted character, the novel is quite engaging as well as endearing and I would recommend Nothing But Trouble to anyone looking for a charming cozy mystery, but be prepared to want to immediately follow-up with the next novel in the series, Double Trouble.

From the Publisher:

With one solved case under her belt, PJ Sugar is ready to dive into her career as a private investigator. Or at least a PI’s assistant until she can prove herself to Jeremy Kane, her new boss. Suddenly PJ’s seeing crime everywhere. But is it just in her head, or can she trust her instincts? When she takes on her first official case-house-sitting for a witness in protective custody-Jeremy assures her there’s no danger involved. But it soon becomes clear that there is someone after the witness . . . and now they’re after PJ, too.

My Review:

Double Trouble takes up where Nothing But Trouble leaves off, with PJ training to become a Private Investigator and working alongside Jeremy Kane, PI. However, Susan May Warren makes the book easy enough to follow for those readers who have yet to read her first PJ Sugar novel, Nothing But Trouble. However, I strongly recommend reading the novels in order as it allows, in my opinion, for a better understanding of the dynamics between the characters as well as the growth of the characters. As usual, PJ Sugar tries so hard to be perfect and realizes at times quite painfully, that she is human like the rest of us. Double Trouble is without a doubt a page-turner and while I was secretly hoping for the book to head in a different direction toward the end, it is with anticipation that I await the third novel to read which direction PJ Sugar’s life will take. Then again, maybe by the time I am reading the third novel, Licensed For Trouble, my views will have completely changed or maybe PJ’s will, but either way, time will tell. As for Double Trouble, I highly recommend this book as well as the first in the series, Nothing But Trouble, for anyone looking for a delightful, witty, cozy mystery.

Book Tour and Review: The Great Christmas Bowl by Susan May Warren

From the website:
Marianne Wallace is focused on two things this holiday season:
planning the greatest family Christmas ever and cheering on her
youngest son’s team in their bid for the state championship.
Disaster strikes when the team loses their mascot-the Trout. Is it
going too far to ask her to don the costume? So what if her husband
has also volunteered her to organize the church Christmas tea.
When football playoffs start ramping up, the Christmas tea starts
falling apart. Then, one by one her children tell her they can’t come
home for Christmas.
As life starts to unravel, will Marianne remember the true meaning of the holidays?

My review: The Great Christmas Bowl by Susan May Warren is a heartwarming as well is hilarious novella of a woman trying to juggle many different hats through the holidays. Marianne Wallace brings a whole new meaning to the word enthusiastic. She is a force to be reckoned with and a neighbour I would dearly like to have. Her youngest of 5 children is a senior in High School and the last child living at home. Living in the small northern town of Big Lake, Minnesota, known for it’s strong Norwegian heritage and heavy snows, Marianne decides to shake up a few things this holiday season. It all begins innocently enough and snowballs into her helping out her son’s school football team, Go Trouts, in a way she never thought possible. Add to that her completely changing the course of the church’s historical and traditional Christmas Tea, Marianne Wallace is indeed placing her own mark on Christmas in the small snowy town of Big Lake. Marianne is not the only one. With an overall prevailing theme of love, and the motto, “It’ll work out”, The Great Christmas Bowl makes for a beautiful pre-Christmas read and definitely, for me, a new tradition.
