Life:  I know I have mentioned this on several occasions, but as I am facing a new chapter in my life it seems an appropriate reminder to all, life goes by far too quickly, savour every moment.  I miss my son, who is away at University and count the days until he is home for break.  I miss the sound of the twins during the day as they have returned to school and I miss our 4 day weekends now that DH was able to make possible over the last half of the summer.  Poof, everything changes in the blink of an eye.

Family Update:  My oldest son is adjusting to University life and the demands of a heavy class load and a part time job.  Twin A is busy with school and the hours spent after school working on the set for the autumn musical.  Twin B  has his first week of work behind him and so far enjoys being employed part-time at the library…now he needs to figure out how to study around his work hours.  DH is once again busy with the new quarter beginning at University and I am once again finding the house too quiet (however the cat loves it).  Currently I am attempting to balance reading time and knitting time.  I have several sweaters to knit up before Christmas and shelves of books to read.  I could listen to books on tape while knitting, but I do so want to re-watch all of British mystery series while knitting.  I am just finishing up Foyle’s War.  :)

Saturday Night: Movie night was quite eclectic as we watched a series of foreign films, played games and just enjoyed being together.

Read and Reviewed:  This past week I read and reviewed 8 books, spotlighted 1 book and had a guest author blog post (I am looking forward to reading her book).  If you have time, please take a look at my reviews, I have a diverse selection of books.

Today I will be reading: Snapped by Laura Griffin

Happy Reading and have a wonderful Sunday.

Life: Time is going by too quickly, but thankfully the heatwave has left.  I have been trying to balance family time, reading, knitting, and getting everyone ready for school to begin without spending too much time worrying about my oldest heading off to University.

Family Update:  School begins all too soon for my boys. On the upside, I will be able to read more per week, on the downside, I will really miss my oldest not being home.  We are trying to enjoy the last few weeks we have together before school begins.  As I mentioned above I have been knitting, it was time to start my Christmas knitting, so far so good.

Saturday Night: We spent the evening watching MST3K (oldest son’s pick), laughing, and enjoying our time together.

Read and Reviewed: This past week I read and reviewed 7 books. If you have time, please take a look at the reviews, one never knows when they will find a treasure.

Today I will be reading: The Glitter Scene by Monika Fagerholm

Happy Reading and have a wonderful Sunday.

Rambling From An Un- Caffeinated Brain

I am in denial. I refuse to believe my tooth hurts. Well it does hurt. I am hoping it will go away. Yes, I am truly hoping it just goes away. After my dental trauma back in February, I cannot go back to that office!

Today begins a 5 day weekend for my husband. Five whole days. It looks as though the weather is planning on cooperating and staying on the cooler side, thank goodness! The boys only have Monday off, so DH and I should get some nice quality time in.

School starting appears to have triggered my desire to resume crock pot cooking. It is so nice to get up in the morning and dump the ingredients into the crock pot and voilà, by the time the guys return fro cross country practice and DH from work, dinner is ready. If you have any delicious crock pot recipes, please let me know. Thanks!

College information is pouring in for my oldest and I no longer recall when I made campus visits. Is it truly time for my son, my baby, to be doing this? I am not ready!

When did I stop receiving fun snail mail? I recall there was a time I could be excited for the mail. Now, it is usually just bills and stuff for the guys. I am expecting some books to be arriving this week or next for reviewing and this makes me smile.

I am very, very excited to be holding giveaways for some fabulous novels! I think I may have finally, at long last, found my niche. My three biggest passions (outside family and friends) are; books, knitting, and coffee! The order changes depending on the time of day.

Quickly, before I plunge the carafe and pour myself that first cup of coffee (oh I am salivating at the thought) I wanted to shall with my dear readers a quick rundown of my current contests.

  • Temple Touch Thermometer giveaway HERE which ends on 9/4!
  • 5 Copies of The Smart One and the Pretty One by Claire LaZebnik, HERE,which ends on 9/15!
  • A copy of Michelle Moran’s newest novel, Cleopatra’s Daughter, HERE,which ends 9/15!

A Touch of Three

It is another stormy day here. The guys did their morning run and were blessed with being rained on toward the end. The weather here has consisted of the three H’s; Hot, Humid, and Hazy! All of which makes me very, very grateful for central air-conditioning.
The week, if yesterday is any gauge, will be flying by at an alarming rate. Half of the day (I wish I was exaggerating) consisted of me dealing with my older son via text on how he can change his class schedule. It was quite a fuss on his part. He was supposed to add A.P. Honors Biology II, but instead opted to add A.P. Honors Chemistry II. *shrug*
About 5 minutes ago, when the runners arrived home sweaty and wet, the twins informed me they too would like to make alterations. I believe Twin 1 will be staying with drama/theatre as his Fine Arts credit, but to my utter amazement, Twin 2 would like to take Art 1 as his Fine Arts credit. I thought he disliked art. I learn something new every single day!
My in-laws arrived to the safety of their B&B in WI. They decided to take a mini-vacation there before heading home and it sounds as though they have found some delightful stores owned by various artisans.
Today will be a lazy one for me. The twinks schedules cannot be changed for another 2 days, which is fine, since yesterday’s long ordeal left me exhausted. Today I shall exercise as usual, shower, read and knit. I am sure a nap will find away into my day.

Rambling From A Slightly Caffeinated Brain

I have not been feeling overly well and I was sleeping in, or so I thought. My sons were off at various activities and rather than DH kissing me goodbye and heading for work, he stayed home and then decided I has slept enough! Why did he wake me? I am sick! The luxury of having teens is that they drive themselves and they can actually care for themselves while I try and heal. My sons arrived home and asked what I was doing out of bed. Good Question!

I found a new (to me) jewellery designer on Etsy. I adore her pieces. They are fresh, clean, and classic. I am quite excited by my new find.

I have been making progress on my Lily Cardigan. Not as much as I would have liked. The design is simple and fairly well laid out so I should have had it completed a week ago! I do not know why I am procrastinating.

It is quite possible that if I hear the telly on, one more time during the day, I will snap. I realise it is summer break, yet I cannot stand the sound of the telly or for that matter, music, during the day. It is grating on my last nerve.

Why do relatives leave me cryptic messages on FB? First off, I rarely check FB. Secondly these are relatives. Pick up the phone (surely all recall what one is) and tell me properly, please. Little messages that I must try and decipher are not working.

This summer has been a long one, yet moving rapidly. Yes, I contradicted myself, I know. It has been a long summer in terms of being mentally exhausted from worry and grief. Yet the days have flown by. It must be age related. Actually, I know it is age related.

Finally, I have mentally added up the cost of my boys heading back to High School in a few weeks and the dollar cost is alarming to say the least. Why do kids become increasingly expensive?

Time for a second and third cup of coffee and possibly a trip back to my bed!

Uncaffeinated Thoughts

I wanted to post my uncaffeinated thoughts (because really, who does not like to read my ramblings?) Unfortunately I was waylaid by some serious pain, worse then my usual. So today, not only are these Uncaffeinated Thoughts, they are also Migraine Hangover Thoughts.

What is a migraine hangover (someone will ask). When I have a migraine of the severity I had building the past three days, the day the pain becomes tolerable my entire body feels “hungover”. I cannot think of how else to describe it. I usually end up sleeping a great deal. I did ask a few neurologists (as I rarely like just one opinion) and discovered this was very normal with my form of migraines and the series of TIAs and the main stroke I suffered. My brain is trying to heal.

Which brings me to Cheese Puffs. I sent my oldest to buy some for me yesterday. I do not know if it is the unnatural orange colour, the flavour, or the texture, but they are perfect when I cannot get anything else to stay down (no, I have no idea why). To watch myself I will add: I was neither paid nor compensated in any way to mention Cheese Puffs (note, I did not even mention the brand, I can tell you it was not a name brand).

On the reptilian front, Sheldon is growing rather rapidly (as most babies do) and is becoming much more like a Bearded Dragon in appearance then a Salamander (to me when we first got him, he resembles a Salamander). We bought him a larger home as the other just was not suitable for the size he will become. My husband thought we were all too optimistic that Sheldon would reach maturity. Sheldon is also an extremely lazy hunter, I can see now his early pampering was a bad idea.

I have decided that I can actually hear my oldest son’s brain cells dying (in my mind it sounds like bubble wrap being popped) as he tries to sneak in TV watching. We normally watch very little telly and I have an incredibly low tolerance for the noise of it during the day, which is to say, I detest the telly being on in the daytime.

Doughnuts. What is it about doughnuts? I do not think I have ever encountered one I do not care for.

My coffee is slowly making its way to my grey matter. I will end with knitting. I had been working on my Lily Cardigan until I was unable to even coordinate my hands to the simple task of knitting. I shall add a photo, but there is not much to see.

Lily is knit from the top down and I am working the left sleeve.

Fortunately I am a lot farther along on it then when I took this photo (which truly is a bad photo). It was the best I could come up with this morning.

Hot Weather Makes Me Knit

It is most definitely summer, which means copious amounts of knitting for me. This is a very good things as my knitting queue is exceedingly long. The warmer it gets, the more I desire to knit.

My current project is the Lily Cardigan by Marie Grace Design clearly, I am not very far, but it is indeed a start.

I realise the details cannot be seen yet, but soon.

I am hoping to begin my newest project shortly. The yarn and pattern arrived today. The pattern is by Knitting Pure and Simple, called Summer Open Cardigan. The yarn I shall be using is Blue Sky Alpacas Organic Dyed Cotton, in Raspberry.

A Closer view

The Open Cardigan should take less than 48 hours, once I begin, so I am itching to give it a go. First I need to knit a wee bit faster on the Lily Cardigan. I should have more detailed photographs of the Lily Cardigan soon.

Uncaffeinated and Migraine Brain Thoughts

I do not think my brain could possible ramble more than today. On top of caffeine deprivation (it is steeping as I type), I have migraine brain. If nothing else, this should prove to be an entertaining blog post.

First off, I am knitting again (did my knitting friends just fall over in a faint?) I am swatching to make Lily, by Marie Grace Designs. I will be using Llamajama yarn in Orchid. I can say with honestly this is the softest yarn I have ever touched. It saddens me to have to add (as a disclaimer to save my bum), I did not receive any compensation to say that nice things about them. To my knowledge they do not even know I did. The yarn (in my unbiased opinion) has a wonderful hand, beautiful drape, a softness I cannot describe and I look forward to wearing it.

Huge news for my household, Sheldon *is* eating!! Apparently Sheldon did not read the book on raising Bearded Dragons and does not realise 75% of his diet should be made up of protein (crickets) while 25% is greens. He humoured me and finally ate 1 cricket late last night. However after trying several salads we hit on a favourite of his! We have a whole baggy of Sheldon Salad; equal parts collard greens, kale, and mustard greens. I confess, prior to Sheldon I had heard of these but only actually seen Kale. A long way to say, my baby beardie prefers veg to insects (I really cannot find fault).

I am about to date myself here, how many of you recall Dudley Do Right? “Here I come to save the day! Viola, it is my husband. Not for me, no. Rather our neighbours are headed out of town and asked it he would mind watching their dogs. The have gorgeous dogs (did I mention big) and well mannered (with their owners present) and he thinks there will be no problem walking into their home while they are away to tend to the needs of the dogs (they have never been left before and being faithful dogs, fiercely guard their home). If by some good fortune my husband is not mauled to death upon entry, walking them should prove interesting. I mentioned they were big dogs? Yes. They are solid muscle. She is a professional trainer and previous body builder (which is to say she is extremely strong) and when she walks them at times it looks as though they will dislocate her shoulders). At this point let me point out my husband (whom I think is the most handsome man around) does not lift weights, he does not exercise. Please think positive thoughts for my husband this weekend. (I will be asking my father who the patron saint of stupidity is, for good measure).

As for the dreaded summer cold? It is so happy in my body, it may indeed be here to stay. I have lost track on how long I have had it now. The summer cold I can handle, the intense migraine pain, that really needs to subside. I know it will never go away. (I came to terms with that diagnosis decades ago.) Yet on a pain scale from 1-10 (5 does not count) I would like it around a 3-4. Before anyone emails me, I do not know why 5 does not count, I did not make up the rules. Although, I may ask, just because.

Children. I must admit to being baffled. Most of you have never met my boys. I have 2 shy and one outgoing. We have been discussing High School Classes as usual. It does not, at this time, look as though any of my children want to follow in the footsteps of their father. My oldest would like to go into Political Science (score one for me), my outgoing one would like to travel the world. He is fascinated by other cultures, so he is thinking Anthropology/Archeology/Biology. The surprise was my extremely quiet son. He would like to (and apparently has wanted to for quite some time) take theatre and videography classes. Mannequin, if you are reading this, I would welcome your thoughts and advise.

My coffee is ready (Ode to Joy is playing in my head). It looks as though the temperatures will be in the 90s yet again today. Wishing everyone a happy and healthy Thursday!

With Love From Denmark

I received the most marvelous birthday box from my dear friend Karen. The boys were thrilled immediately, hoping she had send chocolates from Denmark, which she did. She also sent three birthday gifts, handmade with love.

Hand-knit Fingerless Gloves

They are beautiful, light weight, delicate and shall keep my hands warm, as they are always cold.

Hand-knit Neck-warmer

This will keep me fashionable and warm this winter.

Hand-made Elephant

She makes the loveliest elephants and this will go perfectly in my bedroom!

Thank you Karen for thinking of me and taking the time to make these wonderful gifts for me.

Weekend Recap/Wandering Thoughts

We had a wonderful weekend despite the fact an infection is invading my body has set up an apparently lovely home in my chest and just may never leave.

The cake we ordered from The Sneaky Cat Bakery was delicious! For my birthday, DH ordered the cake he liked, so for Father’s Day I got the cake I wanted.

Sneaky Cat Signature Cake (as always click to enlarge the photo)

Summer is definitely here. The weather went from warm to hot, humid, and hazy. I am already missing the cooler, less humid nights. We purchased some lanterns for our patio and citronella candles to ward off the mosquitoes, hopefully they will work.

Sheldon had quite the weekend. He had his first bath and loved it. Yes, he needs baths, just like a newborn baby. He is also not eating, which is rather concerning, yet has plenty of energy and is drinking. I truly had not thought this through. A day or two after adopting him I realised that Sheldon cannot be left alone. This is a problem. I never, ever wanted a puppy, thinking the upkeep was too much Little did I know about the care and requirements needed for a Bearded Dragon. Not only can one not board a Bearded Dragon, but he needs to be fed live prey. Then there is the lighting situation. His lights are dangerously hot (yes, we almost had a second fire!) and he has various lighting needs throughout the day and night. He also needs a very well cleaned cage – daily. I cannot think of one person who would be willing to babysit Sheldon. Had I been thinking clearly we may have opted for a slightly less needy pet.

Our flowers are growing beautifully and new seedlings are popping up all over the place. Our new trees appear to be adjusting well and show signs of growth. Not much, but some. We do still have the circles of dirt, wood chips, and lack of grass where the two trees used to live prior to their removal. DH promises he will take care of it. Note the date of this post. I will be shocked if the holes are properly cleared out and grassed over before autumn. We are not lazy, rather we detest yard work.

This is the first summer DH has had to teach every day and we are adjusting to his schedule, yet wish he had a day or two off. The boys are up at sunrise to run, while the cat and I sleep for a few more hours.

I have a stack of books to read, a cedar chest filled with yarn waiting to be knit, and weeding that truly must be done. I certainly have enough to keep me occupied. The main difficulty is choosing which to tackle first. I am thinking knitting will win out, at least for today.
