About the Book:

With violent crime on the rise and the political climate changing throughout Mexico, the opportunity for open Christian witness is rapidly decreasing in many areas. Hector Rodriguez pastors a church on the outskirts of the once-peaceful and tourist-popular border town of Tijuana. He has also visited other small churches in the remote and not-so-Christian-friendly towns of Chiapas state, delivering Bibles and ministering to those in the most persecuted areas.

Hector’s mother accompanied him on one of those trips and stayed behind to teach reading—using the Bible as her primer—to a handful of Christian converts living among the Mayan population in San Juan Chamula, where superstition and paganism run rampant, and resentment of outsiders runs deep. In a reaction to that superstition and resentment, Hector’s mother pays a serious price for her unwanted presence—and Hector must then choose whether or not to continue his work in some of the most dangerous areas of Mexico.

My Review:

More Than Conquerors
by Kathi Macias is the second in her Extreme Devotion Series; this novel takes the reader to Tijuana, Mexico, San Diego, and San Juan Chamula. While the book is beautiful and can easily stand on its own, I have read the first in the series No Greater Love and plan to read the third, Red Ink when it is released. More Than Conquerors is a beautiful and at times suspenseful novel of love, family, sorrow, and faith. Pastor Hector Manolo Rodriguez’ s life is most definitely not dull. He has his loving wife Marianna and three children Lupita, Manolo, and Hector Jr., who fill each other’s days with unconditional love, as does their friend Marty from San Diego, who recently finished Bible school and is waiting for God to direct his life. He has decided to leave San Diego and stay with the Rodriguez’s for as long as it takes to figure out his next calling, much to the delight of the family and the confusion of his mother. While Hector is rich in faith, love, family and friends he has many concerns. His mother, Virginia, was called to spread the word of God to anyone willing to listen in San Juan Chamula, a remote Mayan village that does not take to outsiders interfering with their way of life. While Hector is proud of his mother, he is also worried for her safety; it is not unheard of for Christians to disappear in the area where she is living. Then there is Alberto, Hector’s father who walked out on his wife and nine children to move to San Diego. He is dying alone in a hospice center; except for the visits Hector makes from Tijuana to San Diego to visit his father in hopes of his father turning his life over to God. Closer to home, in Hector’s small parish of Casa de Dios, trouble is brewing amongst one of his flock. Senora Antonia Mesa has confided that she worries for her grandson Roberto’s soul, she made certain he was raised in a loving and Christian home, yet he has turned away from his family and found a new family in a gang and has been murdering people. More Than Conquerors is a pure and beautiful novel about family, faith and hope. The reader will discover all sorts of families in this novel, estranged, bitter, happy, longing, struggling, and curious. Macias weaves together several cultures into her novel as well as several types of family units; creating the foundation of a masterfully written story filled with characters the reader will not only care about but also want to know. More Than Conquerors will capture the reader’s heart and attention and I would recommend this novel to anyone who enjoys a beautifully pure, Christian novel.

About the Book:

Forbidden romance, an unlikely martyr, and an even more unlikely hero. Orphaned four years earlier when their parents, active in the African National Congress ANC movement against Apartheid, were murdered, 16-year-old Chioma and her 15-year-old brother Masozi now live and work on an Afrikaner family’s farm. When Chioma and Andrew, the farm owner’s son, find themselves attracted to one another, tragedy revisits their lives. Chioma escapes to join an ANC rebel band in her effort to survive and gain revenge for her family and culture. When cultures clash in life-or-death struggles, Chioma must choose between violence and revenge or forgiveness and selfless love. Loosely based on historical events and set near Pretoria, South Africa, just prior to the setting of the popular movie Invictus, during the violent upheaval prior to ANC leader Nelson Mandela’s release from prison and his ascendance to the presidency of South Africa, this story of forbidden romance produces an unlikely martyr who is replaced by one even more unlikely.

My Review:

No Greater Love
is the first novel in Kathi Macias’ Extreme Devotion series and it is a captivating debut, which will grab the reader’s attention and tug at the reader’s heart from the beginning until the last page. Macias brings the reader to the harrowing times of a deeply divided country, nearing the end of apartheid in South Africa, filled with oppression, segregation, degradation as well as strong characters, strong leaders, and unwavering faith. The reader gains insights into apartheid through the victims of apartheid, the freedom fighters, and the Afrikaners. An orphaned girl, her martyred father’s journal, and the gift of a Bible help spread the word that Christianity and apartheid cannot co-exist. No Greater Love is told with vivid imagery, flowing prose, realistic characters, and the reader will be swept away with by Chioma’s resilience, Andrew’s questioning of right and wrong, Themba’s brutality, and the Vorster’s faith. Macias tells the tale through various sets of eyes, and while they are all of different stations each has a deep love for their country of South Africa. No Greater Love is an astonishingly beautiful tale of the brutality of apartheid and the grace of faith.

Synopsis:

Murder. Could there be a more chilling word? Could it be any more horrible than to have a loved one killed, brutally and heartlessly, without obvious reason or motive? When Liz Peterson’s elderly mother is found viciously beaten to death in her home, Liz and her husband, Charles, along with their grown son, John, and teenage daughter, Sarah, are horrified beyond words. Their previously predictable, respectable lives seem to have vanished without a trace, as they struggle to make sense of a senseless act.

And then a second blow—more devastating, if possible, than the first—rocks them to their core. John is arrested for his grandmother’s murder. As what’s left of the Peterson family begins to crumble under the weight of loss and accusation, the Petersons’ longstanding Christian faith is put to the test in a way they could never have imagined, and unconditional love is stretched to its limits. Will family ties and relationships withstand such a crushing blow, or will evil succeed in dividing and conquering this once close and inseparable family?

My review:

A brutal murder, a son arrested, how much love and faith does it take to keep a family together? These are the central questions that are to be answered in the heartbreakingly beautiful novel, My Son, John. It was a rather ordinary day in February when Liz and her husband Charles learn of Liz’s mother’s death. As Liz gathers her children John and Sarah around her and her husband, to begin to grieve, the pain Liz is experiencing at losing the loss of her mother, is only the beginning. She rapidly learns that he beloved mother was brutally beaten and stabbed by none other than her own son. John’s confession of murdering his beloved grandmother not only shakes the very foundation of faith Liz has, but the faith of her family as well. Liz’s world, as she knew it no longer exists as neighbour’s begin to talk, her daughter Sarah is being tormented and teased at school and Liz does not know how to pull herself together, to live as she puts in the “after”, and make things right at home. Macias takes the reader on one family’s rapid journey to utter despair and shows how love, family, and faith can help one learn to let go, love and ultimately forgive.
