Life:  It is already September and the temperature has yet to cool off.  I am anticipating the arrival of autumn, for soon it means my favourite season-winter-will be here.  I would like to wish everyone a happy and safe Labor Day weekend.

Family Update: I am keeping this short and sweet as my son will be home for the weekend and I am busy scheduling posts so as not to be online while my son is home.  This past week was terrible for me as far as my pain level was concerned, but my family is healthy and that is what matters.

Saturday Night: As I mentioned my oldest will be home for the weekend.  I do not know what he has planned for us as a family, but I can make an educated guess that it will involve takeaway and movie night. :)

Read and Reviewed: This past week I read  8 books and reviewed 7 of them. If you have time, please take a look at my reviews, I have a diverse selection of books.

Today I will be reading:   Absolutely nothing.  My son is home from University and the day is all his.

Happy Reading and have a wonderful Sunday.

Life: So far 2011 is going very well.  I am looking forward to all the new books coming out in 2011!

Family Update: The five of us have been spoiled by the two week holiday which ends this evening. Our oldest has heard from the first of 5 Universities and was accepted. It is my first choice, alas not his.  We have several more months to wait to hear from the other 4 schools.

Saturday Night: was delightful. All five of us were together the first day of the New Year. We spent the day and evening playing board games, watching DVDs and having an all around great time.

Read and Reviewed: I read and reviewed 8 books most of which I queued to post before the holidays so they would not interfere with family time. The others I read wile the guys were out as I did not want to lose any family time.

If you do not want to wait until Monday to see the entire list for the week, all my reviews are up and as usual I love comments.

Today I will be reading: I probably will not be reading today but if I do I really want to finally read (yes the same book I tried to read every Sunday in December 2010) The Green Age of Asher Witherow by M. Allen Cunningham.

Happy Reading and please feel free to leave comments or suggestions.

Life: This past week has been absolutely lovely and I am looking forward to spending another wonderful week with family and friends.

Family Update: Christmas Eve and Christmas Day were tremendously wonderful!  It means so much to me to be with my family and as the years pass and my guys become adults I wonder how much longer it will be just the five of us, then I realise I best enjoy the moment and not fret about what the future has in store.  Since all my guys are still on Christmas break I am anticipating more lazy days filled with family silliness, sledding (we actually have snow!), goofing off and shopping (I know, but we have bookstore gift cards and who does not enjoy being in a bookstore?!?)

Saturday Night: After eating ourselves to the point of being rather full we played games.  Twin 2 received LIEbrary and it is brilliant fun.  The gist is one draws the card with a title of a book, the author and a plot summery.  The rest must write up a convincing first line to the book.  Then the person who is “it” reads the made up ones as well as the real first line and everyone must guess at which is the true first line.  This is so much fun and I am expanding my TBR list along the way.  As we are a family of night owls (oh I know it is redundant) we then watched movies until the wee hours of the morning.  DH received some dreadful movies (which he adores) and what choice did I have I was outvoted 4 to 1.

Read and Reviewed: I did manage to read and review 5 books before the holidays.  I read some absolutely fabulous books, so do take a look, especially if one is looking for books to buy with their gift cards.  This week will be just as light as my family comes first and it is the holidays.

If you do not want to wait until Monday to see the entire list for the week, all my reviews are up and as usual I love comments.

Today I will be reading: I probably will not be reading today but if I do I really want to finally read The Green Age of Asher Witherow by M. Allen Cunningham.   Previous obligations have prevented me from reading several books that I cannot wait to devour. I am implementing new policies in 2011 so I shall be reading more of what I truly enjoy with less pressure.

Happy Reading and please feel free to leave comments or suggestions.

Decorating-Aloha Friday

Seeing how it is Friday, today’s question is going to require as little brain power as possible.

The question for today: Have you decorated for the holidays yet?

The short answer is yes! We spent several nights making decorations (mainly garlands, wreaths, and center pieces) and then decorating our home with the lovely pieces as well as decorating our Christmas tree. The house looks and feels quite festive. Christmas is my favourite holiday.

Rambling From An Un- Caffeinated Brain

I do realise how late it is, 10:27am to be exact, but dear readers, I chose to sleep awhile longer after my teens left for school. One of my migraine medicines makes me hungry and tired, it offers little pain relief, yet I do eat and sleep well.
So, I am waiting not so patiently for my late morning coffee. So what is on my mind? Let me pick what little is left of my foggy brain this morning.

  • Sheldon seems to be finished with his growth spurt, which means a lot less food and more vegetables. He appears happy and healthy.
  • The boys are finished with the cross country season. My oldest runs daily, the twins do not. Thing 1 is involved in the school Theatre while Thing 2 is interested in the Foreign Language Clubs and Animal Outreach.
  • Why do children cost more with each year? Better yet, why was this fact not mentioned in the parenting books?
  • My oldest will be going on another summer survival camp in the Smokey Mountains this summer. Those trips are not cheap, but oddly he adores them. I say oddly because, except for running, he detests being outside. *shrug*
  • The colours of all the Autumn leaves are breathtaking and I cannot wait to jump in the large piles. I do so enjoy the crunch of the falling leaves.
  • I am eternally grateful to have a husband who loves me and all my numerous flaws.
  • Books, naturally I must mention books! Someone asked why my ratings where fairly high (except one book, and it was not a bad rating nor a bad book, just not for me). The answer is simple, I am picky. I know if it is a romance novel, I probably will not care for it, as was the case with the lowest rating I ever gave (which was not low). It was a well written book and I am certain many other readers will enjoy it.
  • A “gee whiz” fact about me…holidays do not stress me out. We have the lowest key holidays possible and I cannot imagine it any other way. Bring on Thanksgiving and Christmas, I am ready!
  • For those of you with cooler air and snow, please send it my way. I am very, very fond of both.

Thankfully, it is coffee time. May everyone have a beautiful, fun, and happy Thursday!

A Real Recipe, I Know, It Is Unlike Me

Ask anyone who has known me for even a brief period of time and they will tell you I do not like to bake. Christmas time is really no exception. However, as a mom, I do give in and make cookies with the boys. A few years back we made a Yule Log and that experience has left me rather hesitant to step out of the world of sugar cookies.

What is even more rare is for me to actually post a recipe. I usually intend to, then I forget. This year we are having company for Christmas. My In-Laws will be here. We have not had Christmas with relatives in 15 years, so I guess I shall need to bake.

The following recipe is quick and easy (of course it is easy, I hate baking) and taste delicious, however the appearance is not as pretty as frosted cookies. My DH loves these and fondly refers to them as “barf in a cup”. Yes, I know, he is still a kid at heart, ignore him. BTW, this is his mother’s recipe. :)

Candy Cookies
makes 100
(no idea of the calorie count as homemade sweets are healthy and should be consumed in large quantities)

Buy the itty bitty paper cups in the baking isle (like mini Reese’s Peanut Butter cups are in) Not that I eat sugary things. ;)

40 Graham Crackers rolled fine (we smash them in a Zip-lock bag)
1/2 Cup melted butter
1 Cup Brown Sugar
1 Cup Half and Half
12 Ounces Semi-Sweet Chocolate chips
1 1/2 Cups Chopped Pecans (I prefer to buy them chopped, but I am lazy)

Mix everything together and fill the paper cups 3/4 full.

Bake at 375* for 10 minutes on cookie sheet.

My MIL says these freeze very well. They never last long enough here to freeze.
