The Sunday Salon (TSS: July 10, 2011)

The Sunday Salon.com

Life:  My blog is back, new and improved! :)   The previous week was a nightmare and I have three exceptional women to thank for getting me back up and running.  I was unable to get as many reviews as I had hoped to up, but my blog and the security of my blog took precedent.

Family Update:  My family is fantastic!  We are all well and we are enjoy the few weeks we have left together before the oldest heads off to college (6 weeks away, not that I am counting).

Saturday Night: After all that has happened I really needed a break so we did nothing but watch DVDs and play games.  It was too nasty to be outside and my guys were thinking a lazy day sounded perfect.  It was delightful!

Read and Reviewed: This past week I read  6 books but only reviewed 5 books as the fifth book was not to my liking.   If you have time, please take a look at the reviews.

Today I will be reading: The Beginners by Rebecca Wolff

Happy Reading and have a wonderful Sunday.

Dewey’s 24 Hour Read-A-Thon T-8 Hours and Counting

Dewey’s 24 Hour Read-A-Thon officially starts for me at 8:00 EDT. First, my apologies in advance, I may be posting more often than usual today due to mini-challenges throughout the Read-A-Thon, I shall try to keep the header clear so those not interested may bypass the post. I am ready with plenty of coffee, water, snacks, migraine medicines and accouterments (ice-packs and rice bags). I learned a lot from the last Read-A-Thon and I did rather well, so I am hoping I do just as well and there is always room for improvement on my part.

The last one was held in October 2010 which happened to fall on Homecoming, this year the Read-A-Thon falls on the last weekend of Spring Break which means my reading may or may not get done, it depends on what the family decides to do.  The weather is gorgeous so hopefully the guys will be outside doing yard work and home improvement stuff so I do not feel guilty.  If not, I shall read very little.  Time will tell.

This year I have a reading plan which I hope to follow, those who know me know I am not quite prone to following a reading plan.

My book selections, in no particular order:

Cold Blood by Lynda La Plante
No Turning Back
by Marcus Sakey
A Small Death In the Great Glen by A.D. Scott
The Thieves of Darkness
by Richard Doetsch
A Lesson In Secrets by Jacqueline Winspear

If I happen to read through all of these I have another stack just waiting to be read.   I will be thrilled if I manage the five above.

The Sunday Salon (TSS: 2/27/11)

The Sunday Salon.com

Life: Where did the month go?  It is the last Sunday Salon of February 2011!   Time is moving so very quickly.  February was a month filled with excellent books and I am hoping March proves to be just as wonderful.

Family Update: It was a lovely week.  We went to a performance our oldest was in and then he and his a cappella group travelled to Chicago for an International competition.  He had a wonderful time in Chicago visiting the sights, shopping, and watching a production of  Les Misérables.  Since he did not get home until early this morning I will not know more until he wakes.  All is well with my family.  My son has narrowed in on choice for Universities, which means soon the suspense for us will be over, until it is the twins’ turn.  They will be visiting colleges and Universities soon.

Saturday Night: It was just DH and me, since our oldest was out of town and the twins had other plans.  My husband agreed to an Austen themed movie night.  I loved it, but I do not think cared for it too much, however he was quite a trooper.

Read and Reviewed: I read and reviewed 9 books and spotlighted a 10th. Please take a look at my reviews, I read some truly brilliant books this past week and had a very difficult time choosing a favorite.

If you do not want to wait until Monday to see the entire list for the week, all my reviews are up and as usual I love comments.

Today I will be reading: (if I have time) The Terror of Living by Urban Waite

Happy Reading and please feel free to leave comments or suggestions.

I Had The Best Of Intentions

My review of Lady of Hay by Barbara Erskine was going to go live at midnight, that was my plan until I realised the guys had the day off!  We slept in, goofed around and then our oldest child remembered he needed a purple shirt for his cabaret performance.   We were rather impressed, he usually recalls these types of details mere moments before needing to dress, so having about 24 hours of advance noticed was thrilling.   Sadly it meant we had to go shopping (which I absolutely, positively detest).  However, now that my children are much older they are great  fun to go clothing shopping with.  We had probably more fun than necessary mocking some of the “new trends” in clothing.   Thankfully they are just trends.   The twins have to take the PSAT in the morning, so we decided to make it an early night of it with popcorn and movies.

Which is an exceedingly long way to say, I have not quite finished Lady of Hay by Barbara Erskine and I am fine with the change in plans and enjoyed…
