About the Book:

Until the dot.com bubble burst, George Bailey never gave much thought to why his grandfather seemed so happy.

But then George’s wealth vanished, rocking his self-confidence, threatening his family’s security and making his adolescent son’s difficult life even more painful. Returning to the little Central Illinois farm town of Abbeville, where his grandfather had prospered and then fallen into ruin, flattened during the Depression, George seeks out the details of this remarkable man’s rise, fall, and spiritual rebirth, hoping he might find a way to recover himself.

Abbeville sweeps through the history of late-19th through early-21st century America—among loggers stripping the North Woods bare, at the World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893, with French soldiers at the Battle of Verdun, into the abyss of the Depression, and finally toward the new millennium’s own nightmares. At the same time it examines life at its most intimate. How can one hold onto meaning amidst the brutally indifferent cycles of war and peace, flood and drought, boom and bust, life and death?

In clean, evocative prose that reveals the complexity of people’s moral and spiritual lives, Fuller tells the simple story of a man riding the crests and chasms of the 20th century, struggling through personal grief, war, and material failure to find a place where the spirit may repose. An American story about rediscovering where we’ve been and how we’ve come to be who we are today, Abbeville tells the tale of the world in small, of one man’s pilgrimage to come to terms with himself while learning to embrace the world around him.

My Review:

When the Dot-com craze went from boom to bust, George Bailey decided he needed to reevaluate his life, and as his world was crumbling around him, he found himself thinking of his grandfather more often than not, a man who went from a farmer to a very prosperous man until the collapse of the stock market, and yet managed to pick himself up again and carry on. Abbeville by Jack Fuller is the story of Karl Schumpeter and the lessons his grandson George learns from retracing his grandfather’s steps, researching his life and through his own memories of his grandfather. Fuller’s novel is based rather loosely on his own grandfather and makes for an intriguing look at history and the manner in which history repeats itself. Jack Fuller takes the reader to Abbeville, a small farm town in Illinois, where Karl’s life was forever changed.
Karl’s father sent him to be an apprentice to his Uncle John Schumpeter who first teaches him to keep ledgers and where he learned the logging trade and a few life lessons that served him well later in life, courtesy of the Dutchman Hoekstra. After his time in Michigan, Karl headed to Chicago where he quickly found himself on the trading floors. Much to his delight, the girl he had been sweet on was also in Chicago that summer apprenticing as a seamstress and Karl and Cristina began to plan a life together. The reader is drawn into the rich history of logging and transitioned easily to the trading floors of Chicago, leading up to the stock market crash of 1929, The Great Depression and WWI. Through it all, the reader grows closer to Karl, a young man who has a tender heart and an eagerness to learn. Fuller takes the reader through the tumultuous times and demonstrates the strength, courage and tenacity to ride the currents of not only the prosperous times, but also the desperate times, of which Karl experiences his fair share.
Abbeville is an astonishingly beautiful novel of subtle lessons passed down through generations and through the memory of George, the reader learns about five generations and the amazing history that accompanies those generations in a rapidly paced novel. The lessons Karl passed down are subtle, yet powerful ones and they are lessons George ultimately recalls and shares with his son Rob. Life is rarely an easy ride and the measure of a person can often be found in how well they deal with the hardest times in their lives. I would not hesitate to recommend Abbeville to any reader, especially those interested in history and multi-generational family relationships. Abbeville is a quick and powerful read and one that would be perfect for a discussion group.

Book Review: Summer at Tiffany by Marjorie Hart

Genre: Memoir

From the Publisher:

Do you remember the best summer of your life?

New York City, 1945. Marjorie Jacobson and her best friend, Marty Garrett, arrive fresh from the Kappa house at the University of Iowa hoping to find summer positions as shopgirls. Turned away from the top department stores, they miraculously find jobs as pages at Tiffany & Co., becoming the first women to ever work on the sales floor—a diamond-filled day job replete with Tiffany blue shirtwaist dresses from Bonwit Teller’s—and the envy of all their friends.

Hart takes us back to the magical time when she and Marty rubbed elbows with the rich and famous; pinched pennies to eat at the Automat; experienced nightlife at La Martinique; and danced away their weekends with dashing midshipmen. Between being dazzled by Judy Garland’s honeymoon visit to Tiffany, celebrating VJ Day in Times Square, and mingling with Café society, she fell in love, learned unforgettable lessons, made important decisions that would change her future, and created the remarkable memories she now shares with all of us.

My Review:

If one is looking for an absolutely delightful and engaging novel, Summer at Tiffany by Marjorie Hart is an excellent choice. Marjorie Hart writes a beautiful, heart-warming and witty memoir that will take the reader back in time to 1945 Manhattan and the unforgettable summer experienced by two college students working their dream job at Tiffany’s for the summer. Hart’s novel is beautifully written, richly vivid in imagery, vibrant characters and the lure of a large city on two young wealthy college students, Marge and Marty. They both were planning on attending summer school in Des Moines, Iowa when a penny postcard arrives for Marge, a fellow Kappa Sorority sister, inviting them to Manhattan for the summer. Summer at Tiffany is so rich in detail the reader will feel as though they are on 5th Avenue and seeing all the sites, hearing the sounds, and living the New York life with the characters. Through the use of near lyrical prose the reader is brought back in time to when women were, in every sense of the word, innocent and feminine. WWII is coming to an end and life is looking up, however, considering the year, Hart weaves in wonderful, first hand historical information. The characters are delightful and one cannot help but enjoy the antics and adventures with the girls in Manhattan. I have not read such a delightful memoir in quite some time and as summer approaches I strongly recommend picking up a copy of Summer at Tiffany. Marjorie Hart is one woman I would truly enjoy meeting.

From the Publisher:

Crime-scene photographer Michael Kapinsky is a man whose first life is in a mess. But his second life is about to get a whole lot messier. Staggering under the financial burden left by his recently deceased wife, Michael struggles to come to terms with her death – until his psychologist persuades him to enter a virtual world called Second Life to participate in a new kind of group therapy. Once there, his persona, Chas Chesnokov, discovers that victims whose crime scenes Michael has attended in the wealthy Southern California resort of Newport Beach have had their avatars clinically executed in the virtual world. Co-opted into the Twist of Fate Detective Agency, Chas embarks on an investigation with an exotic dancer and escort girl. They uncover a series of killings and a financial scam that is netting the murderer millions of dollars. And when Michael is tempted by money that mysteriously appears in Chas’s Second Life account, both his real and his virtual lives are in danger.

My Review:

In Virtually Dead by Peter May, Second Life participants are being murdered and the murder is breaking through to real life. Michael Kapinsky in real life is a Newport CSI who has lost his wife, is about to lose his home and can no longer afford his much needed therapy sessions to help him overcome the grief he is experiencing and to help him move forward with his life. When Michael explains to his therapist, Angela, that he will no longer be able to attend his therapy sessions, Angela informs Michael of a new and experimental group therapy session she has created in Second Life and invites Michael to give it a try. After all what does he have to lose? From these sessions, Chas Chesnokov is created. Janey, Michael’s friend is known as “Twist” in Second Life and has devised a way to make money in Second Life. Posing as a man, she opened Twist of Fate Detective Agency, inviting Chas to be her partner. When people begin dying off, Chas is determined to find out how and who is behind the deaths. Confused? I was dreadfully lost and I still am uncertain what Second Life is, even though May does offer the reader a brief tutorial, which may be helpful to many, but confused me further. The language and abbreviations of Second Life (SL) left me confused and unfortunately for me, a vast majority of the book is written in the format that I can only assume is an SL format. While I did not enjoy Virtually Dead, I never managed to feel comfortable with the layout of the book and had no feelings towards any of the characters; I believe many who do indeed know what Second Life is as well as the terminology may find this mystery to be an enjoyable read. The premise is an intriguing one, yet I was unable to enjoy it due to my struggling with the format and lingo. I am still trying to puzzle out what a “poseball” is and realize now I truly do not care. Clearly, this book was simply not written for me. For those looking for a good mystery that ties real life with Second Life may want to give Virtually Dead a chance.

The Legend Hunters . . .

The Men of Solomon’s meet in secret, their very existence only a rumor among the best of Victorian society. They are treasure hunters, men of wealth and title, seekers of myths and legends. And no legend is as mystifying as the lost city of Atlantis . . .

DESIRE ME

Years ago, Maxwell Barrett found a map to Atlantis and dedicated his life to the search for the mystical lost continent. But when an alluring woman makes a wager for the priceless artifact, he may have discovered an even greater treasure.

A descendant of Atlantis, Sabine Tobias needs the map to decipher an ancient prophecy. What she doesn’t need are the sparks flying between her and Max. He’s too devilishly charming to be trusted: The fate of her people is at stake as well as her heart. Yet a ruthless killer also covets the map. Now Max and Sabine must race to decode the prophecy’s riddle before this criminal fulfills his deadly mission.

My Review:

Desire Me by Robyn DeHart is the second book in The Legend Hunter Series and what an extraordinary book it is. Desire Me stands quite well on its own merits and is a brilliant take on the legend of Atlantis. The characters are wonderfully depicted and easy to like, or not, as the case may be. The villains are quite dreadful as they should be and the heroine, Sabine, is a wonderfully charming, witty, intelligent and all around likeable character. Her three aunts add an element of fun and charm to the novel. Maxwell Barrett the Marques of Lindberg happens to have discovered the map, proving Plato’s writings correct and proving once and for all the existence of Atlantis, the only problem is he is not the only one interested in his find. Desire Me is an intriguing mystery filled with an enticing romance and enough adventure and cat and mouse games to keep the reader not only entertained, but fully engaged and unable to set the book down. I would highly recommend Desire Me to any reader looking for a book to get lost in for an evening.

From the Publisher:

For Ivory Bones Arcineaux and Julian Bynote, life in 1950s New Orleans couldn’t be sweeter. Friends since they met in an illegal gambling house in Newberry, Louisiana, they have their pick of all the fine women, good food, and hot nights they can handle. They seem to have it made-especially Julian who begins to make a new life for himself after meeting the beautiful, classy Magnolia Garbo at a social. But both men are about to find out that letting the good times roll can be deadly when a simple robbery goes wrong and Julian witnesses Bones murdering a man in cold blood. The victim was a white city councilman with all the right connections-and if the two are discovered, it will mean the end to everything they’ve built together. With the New Orleans police hot on their trail, Julian must decide whether rolling in the fast lane is worth losing his freedom and his life.

My Review:

A raid on an illegal gambling establishment run in the antebellum home, Twin Cedars, brings together the most unlikely of partners, Ivory “Bones” Arcineaux and Hampton Bynote in The Secrets of Newberry by Victor McGlothin. In the segregated south, Bones and Hampton form a rather unique and illegal partnership in 1955 New Orleans. Meanwhile Pearl Lee Baptiste, Hampton’s sister, is explaining to Magnolia the ways of Broussard Parish and the secrets it has held for over a century. The Secrets of Newberry is a unique look at the partnership and friendship between a white man and black man, a bond formed in one evening that continues to grow until a murder occurs. McGlothin offers the reader an extremely detailed look at life in the Jim Crow south as well as offering up exceptional, vivid and realistic characters and a pleasing plot with the right amount of surprises along the way. The Secrets of Newberry spans almost twenty years and is a book that the reader will be hard pressed to put down until the very end is reached, and even after the end, the reader will remember the story and the characters, especially the strong women in the book including Magnolia, Pearl Lee, and Ryletta. I would recommend The Secrets of Newberry without any hesitation and think the book would be a powerful discussion group pick.

About the Author:

Essence bestselling author Victor McGlothin is a former bank vice-president who nearly forfeited an athletic scholarship due to poor reading skills. Ultimately, he overcame that obstacle and later completed a Masters degree in Human Relations & Business. Victor is also an on-line columnist of Victor Said?, a real Brotha to Sistah look at relationship. Victor lives in Dallas with his wife and two sons.

Book Review and Book Tour: Thumbing Through Thoreau by Kenny Luck

Genre: Inspirational, Coffee Table Book

About the Book:

On July 4, 1845, when Henry David Thoreau moved into his cabin on the shores of Walden Pond, he was probably unaware that his abode in the woods, and the impact and influence of that endeavor, would forever echo through time. Thoreau was an uncompromising idealist; an ardent maverick who criticized his fellow man. He urged that men and women ought to live more simply, and more deliberately. “The mass of men,” he famously wrote, “lead lives of quite desperation.” Yet the scope of Thoreau’s message is much wider than social criticism. He speaks of spiritual transcendence in Nature and the unbounded potential of the individual. Thoreau is a dreamer and he speaks to dreamers. In a word, shun dogmatism and demagoguery; see beyond the immediate conventional religious explanations to reap a higher understanding. In our commodified contemporary American society, with the rise of religious intolerance and fundamentalism, materialism and mass consumerism, Thoreau’s message is needed now more than ever. Author Kenny Luck has thumbed through Thoreau’s voluminous journals, correspondences and other publications to make this the most comprehensive collection of Thoreau aphorisms available.

My Review:

Thumbing Through Thoreau by Kenny Luck is a beautiful collection of quotes from Henry David Thoreau, compiled in the form of a devotional of sorts. Luck took a more devotional, rather than academic, look at Thoreau’s works and divided his quotes up into three sections, fully illustrated and filled with depth, breadth, and meaning. Thumbing Through Thoreau is a beautiful and calming journey and one that can be read in one sitting, however I recommend savouring the book and reading a passage a day and taking time to reflect upon its meaning and how the passage relates to ones life. I would recommend Thumbing Through Thoreau to anyone looking for a beautiful, tranquil and contemplative book.

About the Author:

About the book
:

Meet Leo Hoffman, a dashing young Hungarian born with a gift for languages. After his dreams for the future are destroyed by WWI, he attempts to use his talent to rebuild his life, only to find himself inadvertently embroiled in an international counterfeiting scheme. When he discovers he’s wanted across the European continent for a host of crimes including murder, he escapes with his lover to Shanghai, taking with him a stolen treasure that will prove to be his salvation or his death warrant. But he soon learns that the gangsters who control the decadent city do not intend to let him outrun his past; and when the Japanese invade, one wrong move costs him everything he holds dear.

My Review:

Heart of Lies by M.L. Malcolm is a beautifully crafted historical fiction novel spanning both world wars and several continents bringing the reader an adventure unlike any other. The story begins in Budapest, the year is 1919 during a period of tremendous political turmoil and economical decline where loyalist and proud Hungarian Leo Hoffman must conceal his Jewish identity to survive. Fast-forward to 1925 and Leo, the head concierge at the Hotel Bristol, finds himself accepting a job to be an international translator and spy for arms dealers. While on his first assignment in Paris he meets and falls in love with Martha Levy. Unfortunately Leo was a little too eager and far too trusting and found himself not only involved in an international fraud but also a wanted man who narrowly escapes to Shanghai. At this point the novel takes off at a rapid fire pace, entertaining the reader with brilliant twists and turns leaving one to wonder just who can be trusted.
Heart of Lies is filled with an array of characters from the loving to the unscrupulous. Malcolm’s depiction of her characters, countries, and historical time-line is well done as she weaves together stories that will capture the reader’s attention and keep the reader engaged until the last page. Of all the many character my favourite character is Maddy. To others who have read the novel, I would very much like to hear your impressions of Martha, Amelia, and some of the decisions made by Leo as clearly I cannot say more without adding spoilers. Heart of Lies is a book I would not hesitate to recommend and one I would highly recommend to book discussion groups, as I truly would have liked to discuss this novel with others.

About the book
:

A handsome and reclusive horse breeder, Spencer Dumarque, the fourth Duke of Morland, is a member of the exclusive Stud Club, an organization so select it has only ten members—yet membership is attainable to anyone with luck. And Spencer has plenty of it, along with an obsession with a prize horse, a dark secret, and, now, a reputation as the dashing “Duke of Midnight.” Each evening he selects one lady for a breathtaking midnight waltz. But none of the women catch his interest, and nobody ever bests the duke—until Lady Amelia d’Orsay tries her luck.

In a moment of desperation, the unconventional beauty claims the duke’s dance and unwittingly steals his heart. When Amelia demands that Spencer forgive her scapegrace brother’s debts, she never imagines that her game of wits and words will lead to breathless passion and a steamy proposal. Still, Spencer is a man of mystery, perhaps connected to the shocking murder of the Stud Club’s founder. Will Amelia lose her heart in this reckless wager or win everlasting love?

My Review:

I am rather excited to share with my readers the first book in a trilogy I will be reviewing by Tessa Dare. The first book in the trilogy, One Dance With A Duke, is the book I shall be reviewing today. In July and August, I will be reviewing the second and third books in the trilogy, Twice Tempted By A Rogue and Three Nights With A Scoundrel, respectively. I am very excited about this tour and hope my readers will be as well.
The novel begins in 1817 London with Lady Amelia d’Orsay placed in the position to beg Spencer Dumarque, the fourth Duke of Moreland, to forgive her brother Jack’s gambling debts yet she learns far more than she bargained for when she did the unthinkable and chose the infamous “Duke of Midnight” to waltz with, rather than he choosing her. Moreland’s nickname has been well earned as he chooses a different lady to waltz with each night as the clock strikes midnight. While they were discussing the fate of Jack’s debts they are interrupted with the news that the founder of the Stud Club, Leo Chatwick, has been murdered, leaving his twin sister Lily alone in the world. While Amelia was not unaccustomed to dealing with her brother Jack’s debts, however murder, especially of a prominent young man, and the inner workings of the Stud Club are all new to Amelia. As for the Duke of Moreland, there has always been widespread rumours and speculations about him, as vast as his temperaments appear to be. Amelia makes a brilliant heroine for she is headstrong, not too proud, defiant, quick witted and intelligent. The perfect match for the Duke of Moreland.
Dare’s characters come to life on the pages of the book as do the scenes, due in large part to her expansive imagery. I personally enjoyed how the story was told through varying viewpoints within each chapter rather than alternating the chapters with a speaker. One Dance With A Duke will enchant the reader, pulling the reader deeper into the story and the twisting plot filled with murder, mystery, intrigue and of course, romance. Romance readers will be greatly pleased with this novel as well as those fond of period novels and a good mystery. I highly recommend One Dance With A Duke and eagerly look forward to reading the second novel. Be sure to stop back in July for my review of Twice Tempted by A Rogue.

About the Book:

Live Happily, Ever After… Now! uses age old, time tested secrets (found in NLP, Law of Attraction, Positive Psychology, and Hypnosis) to teach you how to create the life you want! Ask yourself: Are you in control of what you think, act and feel? Are you living the life you want? Would you like to be happy and successful in everything you do? The key is learning how much control you have over your life, your beliefs and attitudes about yourself, others and the world you live in. Once you understand that you are in control (and you will), then you can use the 9 simple steps to begin living the life you want.

My Review:

I am, by nature or environment, probably a mixture of both, a pessimist, so when I received a copy of Live Happily Ever After…Now! by Terry M. Drake I was, to say the least, extremely skeptical. Using his tools as a Life Coach and family therapist, Drake offers the reader nine clear and concise steps to help the reader achieve whatever goal he or she needs to realise a happier life. Each step takes the reader through a series of exercises filled with illustrations, quotes, and meaningful stories to help the reader along. Through extensive research, years of practise and his own personal experiences, Drake offers the reader a way to analyze their current situation and to learn why their behaviours are what they are and how to change one’s perceptions. In one section of his book, Drake quotes a series of life’s lessons as stated by an unknown author from age six to ninety-two, illustrating how we do not stop becoming who we are at some point in life, but continue to learn from birth to death. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed Live Happily ever After…Now! and the no-nonsense, non-preachy approach Drake chose to use. Did the book change me? Time will be the judge of that, but I am armed with the proper tools to achieve my goal. Live Happily Ever After…Now! is an excellent resource to help anyone achieve a happier life.

About the Book
:

After a difficult childhood, Kim has built a successful life for herself, but she’d leave it all if it meant being rid of the guilt she harbors over a tragic mistake she made years ago. When she meets Rick, she finds everything she needs—including a way to pay for her sins every time he hits her. Kim and Rick’s new neighbor, Joshua, knows more than Kim realizes about Rick’s abusive behavior, but Joshua has battles of his own to fight. Soon to intersect Kim’s and Rick’s lives is Debbie, who has saved countless women from abuse through the shelter she runs but might be as desperate for love as the women she serves. Meanwhile, as Rick’s wrath extends to their baby, Kim must decide if her penance is more important than protecting that innocent life—and if she should dare leave Rick when he has the power to bring her hidden crime to light. A gripping, gritty novel, The Weight of Shadows explores how the risks we take for those we love can touch the lives of others forever.

My Review:

The Weight of Shadows
by Alison Strobel is a beautiful and heart-wrenching novel about the redemptive powers of forgiveness and love. Kim meets Rick at a party, the first guy she has ever dated and falls in love and it is not too long before he becomes abusive, yet Kim believes she deserves the abuse. Debbie Truman runs the Safe In His Arms shelter for women of domestic abuse. While she helps women every day she is unable to unburden herself of the guilt she clings to surrounding her sister. Joshua Miller is dealing with his wife’s recent death, raising their 4-year-old daughter by himself, losing his job and now his in-laws want to prove him unfit and gain custody of their granddaughter. Strobel writes a deeply moving novel, rich in character description, depth, and imagery. The reader will feel rather close to Kim, Debbie, and Joshua as they each struggle with their own personal demons. While The Weight of Shadows is a Christian novel, it is not in your face preachy, rather is an extraordinarily beautiful and at times heart-breaking story of three average people caught up in circumstances they would prefer not to be in as they do the best they can to overcome their situations. Strobel appears to have done her research as scenes are very detailed and the emotions of the victims are very realistic. I truly enjoyed reading this book and I would highly recommend The Weight of Shadows to any adult or discussion group.
