My Review:

For those of you old enough, like myself, you may be skeptical about The Mayo Clinic Diet, but rest assured this is the real deal, not the 1970s diet claiming it was from The Mayo Clinic, which it was not. The Mayo Clinic Diet is the official diet put out by The Mayo Clinic and offers up a sensible, realistic approach to a healthier lifestyle, which can be followed for life. Anyone looking for fast weight loss should stop reading now, as this is the real thing. The Mayo Clinic Diet is not a “diet” in terms of the multitudinous fad diets currently on the market. This is a lifestyle change and made gradually, so one will stick with it throughout life. The book is broken down into three sections consisting of all told 18 chapters. The beginning of the process asks that one access the reasoning behind living healthy then to add five habits, break 5 habits and as a bonus adopt 5 habits. It is actually quite easy to follow and understand whereas so many fad diets have convinced society that to lose weight and be fit there must be some secret ingredient or key that needs to be unlocked. That has never been the case and The Mayo Clinic Diet lays out weight loss, health and fitness in the clearest of terms along with guides to help one live a healthy lifestyle, choose the healthiest food whether at the grocery store or dining out, and understand the benefits of various forms of exercises. The book concludes with three sections referred to as action guides that are aimed at weight loss barriers, Pyramid serving sizes, and some delicious recipe suggestions to help eat healthier. The Mayo Clinic Diet book is an example of how health and fitness books should be and as an added bonus there is a companion journal to help the reader stay on track and see the progresses made. As stated earlier, this is not a fad diet; this book is aimed to help the reader achieve a healthy, well-balanced life.

English is filled with a smorgasbord of foreign words and phrases that have entered our language from many sources — some from as far back as the Celts. A Certain “Je Ne Sais Quoi,” which tells the story of how many of these expressions came to be commonly used in English, will both amaze and amuse language lovers everywhere. You’ll be fascinated to learn, for instance, that . . .

* ketchup began life as a spicy pickled fish sauce called koechiap in seventeenth-century China?

My Review:

As a long time fan of Tom Venuto’s philosophy on fitness, I was thrilled to be able to read and review his book The Body Fat Solution in which Venuto outlines the five principles for burning fat and building lean muscle. Venuto takes a realistic look at how one’s eating and exercise work together to build a healthier and leaner body while building up muscle mass. Venuto’s book is divided into 12 chapters beginning with defining obesity and debunking so many myths that exist about weight loss. Venuto goes on to explain why eating more and more frequently rather than the common trendy “diets” of eating fewer calories, helps not only shed unwanted body fat, but in the long run will help build up one’s muscle mass. Venuto tackles the tough issues such as over-eating, re-programming the way one views diets and weight loss, body image and reprogramming one’s mind to think positively about food. Venuto proceeds with well laid out sections describing as well as depicting exercises and how to put them together to create exercise routines. No stone is left unturned as Venuto even discusses healthy relationships, social networking, and the need to be accountable as well as the need for support. The final section puts everything neatly together for the reader, making certain the reader is armed with the tools necessary to succeed. The Body Fat Solution concludes with Appendices; online support, calorie calculations, recommend foods, and sample menus to get one started to the road to fitness. The Body Fat Solution is an excellent book for anyone tired of fad diets, actually dieting in general, and is looking for sound advice on how to become healthier, leaner, and have a healthy lifestyle.

American Ingenuity in the Innovation Age
by John E. Wade II,
Editor of How to Achieve Heaven on Earth: 101 insightful essays from the world’s greatest thinkers, leaders and writers

We are currently in the innovation age as demonstrated by the fact that humankind’s knowledge is doubling every ten years, and probably more so in technology. America can thrive in an age like this. Why? Let me give you ten good reasons.

America is a nation of immigrants who came here for a better life for the most part. Therefore they have the genes to initiate changes in business, education, computers, the Internet and practically all the fields of human endeavor that require reason.

America has a wonderful system of secondary education which can hatch ideas of all sorts from biochemistry to ecological science to anthropology. You name it and somewhere in the country there is a secondary school or schools that can make you proud.

Social entrepreneurs are a new area catching on as demonstrated by Nicholas Kristof’s wonderful article, “The Age of Ambition.” Kristof writes about how the young people who are engaging in start-up enterprises like Teach America are revolutionizing whole industries, not just teaching people to fish. He calls this phenomenon “the 21st-century answer to the student protestors of the 1960s.” He writes about colleges who are now offering classes in social entrepreneurship. It is my ambition that Soldiers of Love, which will receive half my royalties from How to Achieve a Heaven on Earth, will become a leading charity within the age of ambition.

While I hesitate to point to our government as a leader in innovation, our democracy does have a resilience and ability to change without violating our basic formula of capitalism tempered with democracy.

We are in tough economic times but we have the ability to innovate, worker by worker, company by company, and ultimately even within local, state and federal government. Thus, I believe we will prosper in this age of new ideas. If times were really good, we would not have to change careers or search for new jobs or endeavors. In my own case, I am much happier and fulfilled as a self-employed author, investor and philanthropist than the later part of my career as a certified public accountant with the government. During my 29-year career as a CPA in public accounting, private accounting and government accounting I lost my job a number of times and had to come up fighting for another job, at times within bad economic surroundings. Now I am in a life fulfilling career that only became my calling a few years ago. I am now 64. Life is a pursuit that requires continual growth, especially in the Innovation Age.

Wisdom is something that can be gained through reacting to negative life experiences in a positive manner. There are two essays in the book related to
wisdom, “The Centrality of Wisdom” and “We Urgently Need an Academic Revolution.” These explain the nature of wisdom and how it can and should be taught. Wisdom is the combination of knowledge, values, problem solving, imagination and resilience that can make a real difference in how one approaches adversity in times such as this.

While it might not come to mind right away, we are all made up of mind, body and spirit and it is important to change and innovate in all these areas over time as situations evolve slowly or overnight such as a job loss. Healthy diet and exercise are to a great degree within our own control. In almost everything we do, self discipline is a given for the optimum result. That’s a tough call when you loose your job, your spouse, anything or anybody that’s important to you. But we must cope regardless of the challenge. Story after story in this book tells of successes such as “With Sobriety Anything is Possible” by Todd Crandell who went from a thirteen year struggle with drugs and alcohol to founding a nonprofit foundation to cure or prevent addiction through a lifestyle of fitness and health.

We can even innovate in sex. Stella Resnick writes about how ” . . . lack of sex in marriage is a reliable measure of whether or not the relationship will last.” She says the lack of desire among both men and women in sex is the most important sexual problem in America. This is where couples can innovate on their own and improve their lives whether they are employed or not. It may be more difficult, or it may provide a diversion from the other difficult circumstances faced.

We can innovate with expanding our horizons in racial attitudes, both emotional and intellectual bias. Just look at Martin Luther King, Jr.’s speech abstract dated August 16, 1967 (“Where Do We Go From Here?”)and you will be amazed how far America has traveled along the road to racial harmony. We have elected an African American president. But we must continue to innovate, and I’m speaking about racial attitudes in all directions from all sources.

We can innovate in our own personal fiscal habits. This means such things as knowing what you own and financial literacy in general. I prepare a brief net worth statement practically every day. Perhaps that’s obsessive, but my father, who was a superb investor, followed his stock, AFLAC, and a few other much smaller holdings on a daily basis. I find this distressing at times and sometimes I outsmart myself. But investing is a growing, lifelong pursuit which I would encourage in so many people who are not in poverty and have sufficient monetary assets (generally 4 to 6 months of expenses) and have maximized there tax deferred (401(k) or IRA) plans. I must explain that I am an independent investor, not a trader.

Follow your dreams, but don’t quit your day job until you can really plan a prudent way to navigate your way to fulfillment of your next niche, a niche that will probably evolve in fits and starts over time.

Three Wise Winter Wine Desserts by Mary Ann Esposito, Guest Author

Three Wise Winter Wine Desserts
By Mary Ann Esposito,
Author of Ciao Italia Five-Ingredient Favorites: Quick and Delicious Recipes from an Italian Kitchen

Our diets are in peril! Like clockwork, as soon as the New Year begins, so do all those ads telling us how unfit we are. There are so many diet plans that would have us beat the battle of the bulge as we enter a new year. But while we all scramble in the grocery store to find something healthy to cook, my sweet tooth has kicked in and I am craving something sinfully sweet and succulent to help ward off the winter blues. That nagging feeling leads me right to the produce department. Aha, caught you! Maybe you thought that I was going to recommend some cake, pie, cookies or ice cream. Not a chance. I am thinking sweets that are good for you like baked apples with walnuts and figs, or pears baked in wine. All the ingredients to make them are readily available and the recipes are easy to make. But the best part is how surprisingly good they taste, leaving you not caring a wit if you ever eat pie, cake or cookies again. Your diet, if you stay on it, will thank you.

Baked Apples with Dried Figs and Honey

SERVES 4
4 large Golden Delicious or Cortland apples, washed and cored
5 dried figs
4 dried apricots, diced
1/2 cup toasted chopped walnuts
1/4 cup honey
2 tablespoons of unsalted butter, in bits
1/2 cup white wine or fresh orange juice

Put the figs in a small bowl and cover them with hot water; allow them to stand for 30 minutes to soften them. Drain them, cut off the stems and discard them. Cut the figs into small pieces and place them in a bowl with the apricots and walnuts. Stir in the honey and coat the fruits well.

Preheat the oven to 350°F.

Divide and stuff the mixture in the cored apples.

Dot the apples with the butter and place them in a baking dish.

Pour the orange juice in the bottom of the dish.

Bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until the apples are just soft but not collapsed.

Serve warm with some of the pan juices.

Note: The apples can also be cooked in a microwave oven on high power for 4 to 5 minutes. Microwaves vary, so check your settings.

Dried Figs in Red Wine

SERVES 4
1 tablespoon butter
12 large dried whole figs (1/2 pound)
1/2 cup chopped walnuts
1 cup dry red wine
1/4 cup honey
1 tablespoon grated orange zest

Preheat oven to 350°F

Lightly grease an 8 inch casserole dish with the butter.

Make a slit with a small knife near the stem of each fig just large enough to form a small hole with your finger. Stuff some of the walnuts into each fig and place them stem side up in the casserole side by side.

Heat the wine and honey in a small saucepan just until the mixture is smooth. Pour over the figs.

Sprinkle them with the zest and cover the casserole tightly with foil or oven proof cover.

Bake 30 minutes.

Cool the casserole to room temperature.

Place 3 figs on each of the 4 dessert bowls and pour some of the wine sauce over each.

Pears in Wine Sauce

SERVES 6
6 ripe Bartlett or Anjou pears, washed
6 tablespoons plus 1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup cranberry or pomegranate juice
3 cups dry red wine
Confectioners sugar
Preheat oven to 350°F.

With a small knife remove a small slice from the bottom of each pear to make it stand upright. Using a vegetable peeler, remove 4 or 5 long narrow strips of skin from each pear to make a striped look. Place the pears upright in a deep 3 inch baking dish just large enough to hold them snugly.

Separately combine the juice and wine together and pour over the pears.

Sprinkle each pear with 1 tablespoon of sugar.

Bake the pears uncovered for about 35 minutes, basting them occasionally with the wine sauce.

The pears are done when a knife is easily inserted into them; do not overbake them or they will collapse. When cooked, transfer the pears with a slotted spoon to a serving dish.

Pour the wine sauce into a small saucepan and add the remaining 1/2 cup sugar. Bring the mixture to boil, then reduce the heat to low and cook until the liquid is reduced by half and is syrupy looking.

Remove the pan from the heat.

Baste the pears with the syrup frequently and refrigerate them at least one hour before serving.

To serve, place the pears on individual dessert dishes and spoon some of the sauce over each one.

With a small sieve sprinkle confectioners sugar over each pear for a beautiful striped effect.

ISBN: 978-0385529778
Genre: Historical Fiction

About the Book:

From the acclaimed, bestselling author of The Piano Shop on the Left Bank comes a historical novel about Jean-Baptiste Charbonneau, the son of Sacagawea, and his intriguing sojourn as a young man in 1820s Europe.

Born in 1805 on the Lewis and Clark expedition, Jean-Baptiste Charbonneau was the son of the Voyage of Discovery’s translators, Sacagawea and Toussaint Charbonneau. Across the Endless River evokes the formative years of this mixed-blood child of the frontier, entering the wild and mysterious world of his boyhood along the Missouri. Baptiste is raised both as William Clark’s ward in St. Louis and by his parents among the villages of the Mandan tribe on the far northern reaches of the river.

In 1823 eighteen-year-old Baptiste is invited to cross the Atlantic with the young Duke Paul of Württemberg, whom he meets on the frontier. During their travels throughout Europe, Paul introduces Baptiste to a world he never imagined. Increasingly, Baptiste confronts the limitations of life as an outsider; only Paul’s older cousin, Princess Theresa, understands the richness of his heritage. Their affair is both passionate and tender, but Theresa’s clear-eyed notions of love, marriage, and the need to fashion one’s own future push Baptiste to consider what he truly needs. In Paris he meets Maura Hennesy, the beautiful and independent daughter of a French-Irish wine merchant. Baptiste describes his life on the fast-changing frontier to Maura, and she begins to imagine a different destiny with this enigmatic American. Baptiste ultimately faces a choice: whether to stay in Europe or to return to the wilds of North America. His decision will resonate strongly with those who today find themselves at the intersection of cultures, languages, and customs.

My Review:

Across the Endless River is a masterfully told tale of the life of Jean-Baptiste Charbonneau, the son of Sacagawea and Toussaint Charbonneau. The novel is told in such a manner that the reader is transported to the 19th century and one cannot help but feel as though one is transported back in time standing alongside Jean-Baptiste as he journeys, loves and ultimately must decide where he belongs. While historical in nature, the heart of the book is Jean-Baptiste’s struggle to find out who is and silence the inner longing to be accepted. The sense of not being of one nationality or another, leads Jean-Baptiste to journey and struggle to find himself and his home. Historical fiction fans will find this novel to be a brilliant novel and I dare say those who are uncertain whether or not historical fiction is the right genre for them, will not be disappointed with this book.

About the Book:

We manage (or at least we think we do) with less sleep, less exercise, and more work, eating junk and processed foods on the run, fueling up with caffeine and sugar. Toss in 24/7 news and addictive devices that give us “screen sickness,” and is it any wonder that anxious is the new normal?

Our bodies have been hardwired to cope with stress since prehistoric times, but we are biologically ill-equipped to handle the kind of stress that accumulates in our lives today.

The brain, in all its majesty, can’t distinguish true physical emergencies from daily hassles, deadlines, information and technology overload, difficult decisions, guilt, and worries. The physiological reaction is the same: a chronic hormonal surge born of our instinctive fight-or-flight response. The result is a cluster of dangerous symptoms: immune deficiencies, high blood pressure, obesity, insomnia, and a wide range of other ailments. This is what world-renowned integrative physician Dr. Roberta Lee has defined as the SuperStress syndrome, a form of post-traumatic stress disorder and an emerging pandemic caused by our overstimulated, undernourished lifestyle. But she has the solution.

In this empowering, life-changing book, Dr. Lee shows you how to build crucial stress resistance and resilience back into your hectic life with a unique prescription for recognizing, rebalancing, and protecting against stresses small and large. Starting with a comprehensive, informative quiz to determine your stress level and stress personality type, The SuperStress Solution then guides you through a 4-week healing program to reset your rattled nervous system to a default state of rest instead of high alert. Discover how to:

* NOURISH your body with nutrient-rich foods, herbs, and supplements that repair stress damage and fight off new stress
* DETOX your system and jump-start your body’s healing with an easy-to-follow eating plan
* SYNCHRONIZE your life and bring harmony to your daily routine by restructuring your priorities
* SLEEP well again by following simple steps to protect and promote the rest your body needs
* MOVE to simple, low-impact exercises that can be done in five-minute to one-hour increments
* RETRAIN your mind so that you can access a sense of peace and calm even in your most stressed-out moments

The SuperStress Solution will do more than help you beat back the overload that is making you sick; it will restore physical harmony and balance. More than a program that makes you feel better, it is a program that will make you truly well.

My Review:

The Superstress Solution is a must have book for anyone who encounters stress. While the version I read is not the finished copy, I can point out how well laid out and superbly written this book is. The first part of the book discusses stress and your body and mind which leads into a series of questionnaires to determine one’s superstress type, the physical toll stress takes, one’s resilience to superstress and finally a questionnaire on any recent stressful events. The second part of the book offers tools to use to combat superstress, which leads into the third part, offering up a four-week superstress solution ass well as solutions for each superstress type. Dr. Lee encompasses the whole person and even includes recipes that one can use everyday or for a short period. The Superstress Solution is a book I will be using for quite some time. I enjoy Dr. Lee’s holistic approach to stress and even though living on a deserted island was not an option to all my problems, I believe I am well equipped to handle stress better after reading and implanting the many useful tools.
