Trees, Shrubs, and Flowers! Oh My!

I have spent from sun up to sun down in the yard working. I detest yard work. It could be because I am dreadful at it, lack an eye for colour and/or am allergic to all things green. Most likely a combination of all three. We purchased a Norwegian Maple (Silver Tip) and a Buckeye Tree. I will post photos later, we need to use every bit of daylight and I honestly will be amazed if we finish everything today.

Hopefully I will have photos tonight to post and come Monday morning I will be able to stay inside and visit all of my bloggy friends! Right now my very generous neighbours are waiting to help us make our yard more appealing. Apparently I am having a red and white flower theme in my front yard. My neighbour loves landscaping and I do not, so I just follow orders. I will post when I can!

A Bang, Smoke, Then Silence….

This weekend began with a bang, quite literally! Yesterday afternoon, my neighbour decided to resume work on trimming his tree before my husband and another neighbour arrived home to help. They (well I was there as well) had gotten off to a late start Thursday evening, when the three of them decided to begin this project of trimming trees. I can only presume my neighbour wanted to get an early start, so he climbed up his tree and felled the limb. Unfortunately, the limb fell the wrong way, as limbs often do around here, and took down our power line which blew the transformer box which shook the house. An exciting chain of events until I realised I was losing my A/C and Internet! We also received a caution from a very nice electric company worker, who needed the OT (we asked if we had spoiled his holiday) since the series of events above lead to the mast and some of our roof being damaged. I am truly hoping the repair is minor. My neighbour is fabulous, unfortunately it is not him we need to give the bill to, as he does not own the property, it is owned by his BIL, and he is not quite as easy going. For those wondering, my first thought was to make certain my neighbour was fine! Power was restored, albeit over 2 hours later, a plan was hatched and today we shall be working on finishing his tree, working on our tree, then the other neighbour’s tree. If at any point the thought of “Larry, Daryl, and Daryl” came to your mind, you are not far off.

The economy is rather tight around here and awhile back I was asked what good things I saw coming from the recession, at that time, I honestly did not see many. These past couple days I am now able to answer that question. Due to impending lay-offs, pay cuts, less clients, and injuries (as seen in my little corner of the world), our neighbourhood is banding together and helping each other work on homes and yards, some things would probably be better left to professionals, yet tree trimming is really expensive!

This holiday weekend will be filled with a lot of yard work (I have a burn on top of a tan) and reconnecting with our neighbours (which I look forward to). Tomorrow is my Wedding Anniversary and I really would prefer not to be working in the yard, rather relaxing with my husband. Yet, I have a feeling, we will still be trimming tress.

Please say a wee prayer that no one is injured this weekend. I really do not want to spend it in the ER! May everyone have a safe holiday weekend! Oh yes, if you need any firewood, do stop by. We do not have a fireplace.

Uncaffeinated Thoughts On A Monday Morning

It is a beautiful sunny morning and I am, as usual, waiting for my coffee to steep.

First, before I forget, there is a lovely contest at Mrs. Cox’s Slice of Heaven for Bodum’s newest French Press, the Bodum Bean. Seeing how Bodum helps me wake up and celebrate the evening, I really would like to win their newest French Press. Without coffee, it is not a pretty sight, and I adore Bodum. I have been a faithful Bodum customer for well over a decade.

I am stunned and amased at the amount we accomplished yesterday. My oldest hates working outside (really I cannot blame him, so he worked on cleaning inside while the rest worked on making our yard and patio ready for the season (presentable). I must say it looks rather lovely (and I fancy the neighbours are happier as well) The guys weeded and raked, cleaned off the patio and the patio furniture, staked Peonies and Clematis, remade new borders around beds, cleaned out bird feeders, and when all that was finished, the oldest went out to mow the lawn. While he was mowing, DH and twin 2 went off to buy several flats of flowers which they proceeded to make into lovely hanging baskets and pots. By the evening, our yard was looking lovely! All in all, a day’s worth of work and $60 later and we are set!

I finally tried my swimsuit on, it still fits. As of this moment, I have not decided if that is a good thing or a bad thing. Maybe a bit of both?

Riddle me this dear readers. How is it possible to accumulate so much laundry over the weekend? During the week I do 3 loads a day. What was a clean laundry room (yes, I should have taken a photo) is now piled with laundry. How did this happen?

As I glanced up I noticed a book eagerly awaiting me to finish reading it so that I can submit my review of it. It appears my day will involve reading, writing and laundry. I do not mind the reading or the reading parts of the day. I am a tad bitter about the laundry that appeared after I retired last evening.

Sunday week is my Wedding Anniversary! I am rather excited! Yes, I still get excited over our Anniversary, even after all these years.

Finally, as I am about to take my first sip of coffee, how is it this school year went by so quickly? There are only 13 more days left!

Wow, seven things about me that are awesome? Seven? Seriously Seven? I asked my family for help (not the best idea, but here is what I have)

2) According to my oldest twin, I am awesome because I am his mom. (yes, he chose an easy out)
3) My first born mumbled that I am awesome because I am different. (I did not ask him to elaborate, I am going with it being a compliment, okay?)
4) My husband says I am awesome because I am dedicated to my family. (read patient)
5) I am an excellent at multitasking.
6) I am extremely loyal.
7) I am only as awesome as the people I call my friends. (and my friends are extremely awesome!)

I am supposed to pass this award on to seven bloggers that need a little bling and hug, because they’re awesome. I cannot choose 7. If you are one of my readers, consider yourself tagged. As each and every one of you are Awe-summ!

Today Is the Dreaded Baking Day

Today is the family baking day. It should be filled with fun, laughter, and good memories. Yet our baking days historically do not usually end up that way. Trying to be optimistic I am hoping this year’s baking day goes much more smoothly than last year. Time will tell.

For the moment, before the flour starts flying, my friend Deb is hosting a cookie exchange, so here is my cookie recipe:

Candy Cane Cookies

1 cup butter or margarine
1 cup sifted confectioners sugar
1 egg
1-1/2 teaspoon almond flavoring OR 3/4 teaspoon peppermint flavoring
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 1/2 cups all purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup crushed peppermint candy
1/2 cup white sugar

Preheat oven to 375 F. Mix butter sugar, egg, and flavorings thoroughly. Add flour and salt, Mix well. Shape dough into a disk and wrap with plastic wrap; chill for at least 2 hours or until easy to handle. Roll into 4 inch strips; place on baking sheet. Curve top down to form handle or cane. Bake 9 minutes. While still warm, remove from pan and sprinkle with candy and sugar mixture.

Dough may be divided in half and colored with 1/2 teaspoon red food coloring if desired. Roll each color into strips, place side by side, press together lightly and twist like a rope.

I will update how our family baking day goes later today, however it is not looking good.
