12 x 12 Challenge

I am finally joining in the 12×12 Challenge. I have seen it around and really did not know much about the challenge, so I stayed quiet. The challenge this month is being hosted by Sheila and all the information and sign-up link can be found at her website – One Person’s Journey Through A World of Books.

My personal goal is going is to add in books I am not quite certain I have time to get to this month, but really want to read. I set the bar high for myself, my list my not look impressive, however if one could see my April planner it would be quite clear why these 10 books are indeed a challenge. Wish me luck!

  1. Abbeville by Jack Fuller
  2. The Cradle by Patrick Somerville
  3. Day For Night by Frederick Reiken
  4. The Evolution of Shadows by Jason Quinn Malott
  5. The Good Doctor Guillotin by Marc Estrin
  6. The Island by Elin Hilderbrand
  7. The Journal of Antonio Montoya by Rick Collignon
  8. Mr. Rosenblum Dreams In English by Natasha Solomons
  9. Sea Witch by Helen Hollick
  10. Taroko Gorge by Jacob Ritari

Booking Through Thursday – Break?

Do you take breaks while reading a book? Or read it straight through? (And, by breaks, I don’t mean sleeping, eating and going to work; I mean putting it aside for a time while you read something else.)

Not once in my four decades of reading, not even during my college lit/Russian lit years. Usually I cannot put a book down. I do not think I have the skill required to juggle more than one plot line, I have neither tried to nor do I plan to give it a go. I like to complete a book, digest it, and review the book before moving on to the next novel waiting to be read.

Anyone can play along each Thursday with Booking Through Thursday.

Booking Through Thursday-Why I Read

Today’s questioned was suggested by Janet:

I’ve seen this quotation in several places lately. It’s from Sven Birkerts’ ‘The Gutenberg Elegies: The Fate of Reading in an Electronic Age’:
“To read, when one does so of one’s own free will, is to make a volitional statement, to cast a vote; it is to posit an elsewhere and set off toward it. And like any traveling, reading is at once a movement and a comment of sorts about the place one has left. To open a book voluntarily is at some level to remark the insufficiency either of one’s life or one’s orientation toward it.”
To what extent does this describe you?

I do so love to read. I am truly an unapologetic bibliophile. I do not believe the extent of my love of reading rests solely on the “insufficiency” of my life nor do I feel it is a reflection of my “insufficiency” to my orientation in life. I read because I yearn for knowledge. I crave the beautiful prose and the places I can be drawn into that I would not otherwise have been able to travel, especially in my beloved historical fiction novels. I am drawn to books, as a sensory reader, I crave the feel of the pages, the smell of the books, the words o the crisp pages, for me the entire experience is pure bliss.

Ramblings From A Migraine Addled Mind

It has been far too long since I have typed out the thoughts all jumbled up in my migraine addled brain. Mainly because I have been far too busy reading and writing reviews (and no, that is not a complaint). I know, me not complaining, fancy that!

Most noteworthy, we finally received snow in my small part of the Midwest. I was resigned to a winter of greenish brown and living vicariously through those with snow. Now I have some of my very own. Pictures will be posted Wednesday. I get all giddy when I see snow, I cannot help it.

My family is well for which I am thankful. The teens are teens, thankfully they are excellent sons, pity they have an attitude with me. I assume it is all part of being the mum.

My pampered, spoiled cat, is cold and not at all amused with the snowfall as it means colder temperatures and lack of sun. Interestingly enough she is an indoor cat and one would think the weather outside would not dictate her mood, yet it does.

My reading is going quite well, I am enjoying my new-found niche as a book reviewer. With that said, I feel I have very little connection with other book reviewers, sort of like being picked last in gym class because everyone must play. Do not interpret my words to say anyone has been cruel, just the opposite, book reviewers are kind and passionate about books and ready to help fellow readers and reviewers. Rather, I am a reclusive book reviewer, as well as being a relatively new book reviewer on the blog block and therefore do not know the other reviewers very well. I truly miss connecting with other reviewers. I visit their blogs, and they visit mine, yet I miss the connections and hopefully time will build those connections. Or quite possibly I am over-analyzing the entire situation. I am only working with about 1% of my brain at the moment.

There has been a lot of discussion as of late about eReaders. My thoughts, for what it is worth (which truly is not much). I am neither for nor against them, they simply are not for me. I have a very difficult time reading things online and eReaders pose the same problem. My strokes and continual TIA’s do not help. Medical issues aside I am a sensory reader (save taste!) I love books! I cannot imagine not having piles of books, being able to touch them, smell them (yes I am one of those readers who does indeed enjoy the smell of new books), turn the pages, look at the detailed covers, it all delights me.

I sort of got myself derailed as the boys came in after clearing the end of the driveway the snowplow re-blocked. I am certain I had more useless, rambling thoughts to share. The thoughts have a way of looping around, so maybe next time.

Time to go back to reading and enjoying a relaxing day of not doing much at all. My favourite kind of day. May the books keep arriving and the coffee always be strong.

Aloha Friday 29 January

Seeing how it is Friday, today’s question is going to require as little brain power as possible.

The question for today: Who is your favourite author?

I am always looking for new books to read. My favourite authors are Jane Austen and P.G. Wodehouse.

Visit An Island Life for more fun Aloha Fridays.

Booking Through Thursday – Complicated

So, today’s question is in two parts.
1. Do YOU like books with complicated plots and unexpected endings?
2. What book with a surprise ending is your favorite? Or your least favorite?

1. I am a huge fan of complicated books, the more complex the better.

2. My least favourite type is book is one where I can, with a fair degree of accuracy, determine the ending as well as the means to the end, before I am a quarter of the way through the novel.
