From the Publisher:
From Brunonia Barry, the New York Times bestselling author of The Lace Reader, comes an emotionally compelling novel about finding your true place in the world.
A respected Boston psychotherapist, Zee Finch has come a long way from a motherless childhood spent stealing boats. But the actions of a patient throw Zee into emotional chaos and take her back to places she though she’d left behind.
What starts as a brief visit home to Salem begins a larger journey. Suddenly having to care for her ailing father after his longtime companion moves out, Zee must come to terms with a strained and awkward relationship that has always been marked by half-truths and haunted by the untimely death of her mother. Overwhelmed by her new role, Zee must destroy the existing map of her life and chart a new course—one that will guide her not only into her future but into her past as well.
My Review:
The Map of True Places by Brunonia Barry takes readers on an emotional ride through the life of one Zee Finch, now a psychotherapist, but one who endured at a young age one of the worst imaginable tragedies as she witnessed her mother’s suicide. Barry expertly crafts this tale of extreme despair, encompassing all of the emotions burdening Zee from her tragic past through to the present where one of her patients, Lilly Braedon, commits suicide, sending Zee into a state of shock and disbelief that what she had worked so hard to forget from her childhood has now resurfaced. But is she any better prepared to handle the truth? Barry not only writes of these hardships, but furthermore explores the healing and reconciliation that Zee needs so badly. After taking a leave from her career to spend more time with her ailing father who was just separated from his life partner. Barry adds a twist when readers learn that Lilly had a vengeful mate who is now out to exact his revenge on Zee. Through this emotional, yet strangely intriguing and suspenseful tale of friendships, betrayal, revenge and narcissism, Barry masterfully crafts a tale, so real and believable, yet so gripping, one can only speak of praise for this author. I would recommend The Map of True Places to any reader and especially to book discussion groups.
Born and raised in Massachusetts, Brunonia Barry lives in Salem, with her husband and their beloved golden retriever, Byzantium.
