Golden girl of the supernatural world, orphaned daughter of a dark witch and a conniving sorcerer, Savannah Levine has nothing to lose and everything to prove on her first solo case as a paranormal investigator.

She’s got a wide arsenal of spells at her fingertips, many that only she knows.
She’s got a tough-as-nails attitude and an even sharper wit.
She’s got one problem though . . . no one thinks she can handle this on her own.

Savannah has the power . . . and she’s not afraid to use it.
————————————————————————————————-
At twenty-one, Savannah Levine—orphaned daughter of a notorious dark witch and an equally notorious cutthroat sorcerer—considers herself a full-fledged member of the supernatural race that rules the Otherworld. The once rebellious teen has grown into a six-foot-tall, motorcycle-riding jaw-dropper with a full arsenal of spells that she’s not afraid to use when she gets caught in a bind. There’s only one small problem—her adoptive parents, Paige and Lucas, don’t always trust her. Of course, she’s given them plenty of reasons . . . but those are in the past. People can change, right?

When Paige and Lucas take off on a romantic vacation alone, leaving her in charge of their detective agency, Savannah is presented with a case that she can’t turn down, and one she can finally call her own. Recruited by another supernatural detective, she travels to Columbus, Washington, a small, almost shell of a town. Two troubled young women have been found in an abandoned warehouse, murdered. Now a third woman is dead, and darker forces seem to be at play.

Savannah feels certain she can handle the case, but with supernatural activity appearing at every turn, things quickly become more serious—and far more dangerous—than she realizes. Caught up in a web of lust, false identities, and lies, Savannah must summon strength from her depths, and fight like she’s never fought before.

Book Review: Vivian Rising by Daniella Brodsky

Title: Vivian Rising
Author: Daniella Brodsky
Publisher: Downtown Press
Publication Date: August 3, 2010
Paperback: 352 pages
ISBN: 978-1439172025
Genre: Fiction

From the Publisher:

Vivian Sklar has always depended on her wise and feisty grandmother—not just because Grams raised her after Viv’s mother took off twenty years ago, but because she seemed to have life all figured out. So when Grams dies, Viv feels completely alone. Everything she once knew seems unfamiliar and unwelcoming—until she finds hope in a most unlikely place: the cluttered second-story walk-up of an alarmingly perceptive astrologer. Viv thinks horoscopes are about as reliable as fortune cookies, but when Kavia’s first reading dissuades her from taking a train that later crashes, she’s hooked.

Under Kavia’s guidance, Viv begins to process her grief and rebalance her life. She faces her mother, gets her career back on track, and even shares some meaningful moments with Len, her handsome new neighbor. Every prediction seems to speak directly to Viv’s life, and so far, the stars haven’t steered her wrong. Then the stars tell Viv that the bond she has forged with the insightful yet guarded Len isn’t meant to last. Len has become her greatest source of security and comfort, but just as she settles into his arms—and into his heart—Kavia insists that a relationship with him is dangerous. Now Viv faces a choice: should she follow the path that’s been written in the stars, or trust herself to write her own story?

Witty and honest, Daniella Brodsky’s charming new novel is a powerful tale of moving on, letting go, and keeping the faith—in any form it happens to take.

My Review:

Vivian Rising by Daniella Brodsky is an absolute delight to read. Filled with wit, wisdom, enjoyable characters and the never-ending quest to find out what one is meant to be when one grows up. Her Grams raised Vivian and when she passed away, Vivian was at quite a loss as to how to continue on, until Kavia enters her life and while at first, Vivian is skeptical about all the astrological predictions Kavia makes, until she begins to see them coming true. Kavia takes Vivian under her wing and helps Vivian to soar. With the exception of the astrology bits, I found this book to be a jolly good and enlightening novel. Vivian Rising covers just about all the emotional bases and does so smoothly without separating the story. The characters are so vividly described and charming that I wholeheartedly fell for Richter and Len all the while rooting for Vivian as she encountered each new step, willing her the strength needed to take the leaps of faith necessary to get from one point to another. I would recommend Vivian Rising to anyone looking for a delightful, feel-good novel to get lost in. It is my opinion that Vivian Rising would make for an excellent discussion group book.

Book Review and Tour: Close To His Heart by Leonora Pruner

Title: Close to His Heart
Author: Leonora Pruner
Publisher: Nordskog Publishing, Inc.
Publication Date: March 25, 2010
Paperback: 384 pages
ISBN: 978-0982492956
Genre: Historical Fiction, Romance

From the Publisher:

The longing of both and for a loving, like-minded spouse results in a romantic courtship. Serious misunderstandings shatter their marriage until Grace’s loss of memory offers an opportunity for renewal
— if they can forgive each other.

My Review:

Set in the 18th Century, Close to His Heart by Leonora Pruner is not only a historical romance, but also a mystery. Young Grace Carstares is rather excited at the prospect of being married and the maturity she believes comes with marriage. Grace was planning to sneak out of the house to elope with her love, Edmund, but when she attempts to sneak out she discovers a stranger guarding her door. The next morning, Grace makes the acquaintance of the man who spent the night outside her door. Not only does Grace discover Lord Henry Buryhill is intent upon marrying her, but he also knew of her plans and sent word to Edmund calling off the elopement. Close To His Heart is a charming historical romance with a healthy dose of mystery and intrigue added into the plot. Pruner does an expert job on capturing the times, the fashion, the mannerisms, and the language of high society in the 18th Century. Pruner’s characters are realistic and quite easy to identify with. Close to His Heart is an excellent choice for those who have wondered if they would be interested in this time period of the British ton, for it is my opinion that Close to His Heart gently eases the reader into the time period whereas other period books assume the reader already is quite familiar with the time period.

About the Author:

Leonora Pruner was born in Dubuque, Iowa, but has lived most of her life in California. Writing has been an important activity since junior high. She graduated from Westmont College in 1953 and earned an MBA from Pepperdine University in 1981.

Fascination with a possible eighteenth-century English character led to five years of extensive research, which resulted in the 1981 and 1987 publication of two period novels. That time remains of great interest to the author, and she continues to use eighteenth-century England as a setting for her work.

Leonora married in 1953, and her family has expanded from two children to thirteen grandchildren and five great-grand-children.

She lived in the Republic of Maldives from 1987 to 1997, where she collected folklore and taught economics and computer science. While there she wrote the first drafts of this book.

Other books by Leonora Pruner include Love’s Secret Storm and Love’s Silent Gift. The title of her next novel is The Aerie of the Wolf.
