About the novel:

To most people, Folly Beach, South Carolina, is simply the last barrier island before the Atlantic. To some, it’s a sanctuary, which is why Janie Hamilton’s mother encourages her to buy the local book store, Folly’s Finds, hoping it will distract Janie from the loss of her husband in Afghanistan. Janie is at first resistant, but intrigued after finding love letters and an image of a beautiful bottle tree in a box of used books from Folly’s Finds, and decides to take the plunge. The store’s seller insists on one condition: Janie must allow Lulu, the late owner’s elderly sister, to continue selling her bottle trees from its back yard. Historically, bottle trees were brought by African slaves to the American South, and Janie had grown up with one in her backyard, and it has always been a symbol of refuge to her.

Janie generally ignores Lulu as she sifts through the love letters, wanting to learn more. But the more she discovers of the letters’ authors, the closer she feels to Lulu. As details of a possible murder and a mysterious disappearance during World War II are revealed, the two women discover that circumstances beyond their control, sixty years apart, have brought them together, here on Folly Beach. And it is here that their war-ravaged hearts can find hope for a second chance…

My Review:

Filled with emotion, longing, secrets and hope, On Folly Beach by Karen White is a beautiful look at two women, brought together by circumstances unknown to the other, who learn they may not be as dissimilar as they each originally believed. The story is told alternating between present day Folly Beach 2009 and 1942 Folly Beach the year that changed so many lives. Emmy, at the urging of her mother, drives to Folly Beach to consider purchasing Folly’s Finds from Abigail Reynolds and to rent a cottage from Abigail’s son Heath. However before even entering the home, Emmy encounters Lulu O’Shea, the creator of the bottle trees, and Heath’s great-aunt, an acerbic woman who does not take a liking to Emmy. Lulu, now into her 70′s has seen a lot, held onto secrets as well as heartbreak and is uncertain of her new business partnership with Emmy. Emmy begins uncovering secret notes in books and longs to learn about the past and about Lulu’s sister Maggie and cousin Cat, yet Lulu is extremely good with secrets. On Folly Beach is a beautiful look into the fragile and complex lives of people and the lengths they will go to hold on to secrets, past hurts, and grudges. White’s characters are fantastically created and quite easy to imagine knowing. White weaves together a tale spanning three generations of women and the men they loved and lost due to war. On Folly Beach is a captivating, mysterious and at times heart breaking novel that will keep the reader engaged until the very end. I would recommend On Folly Beach to all readers and encourage discussion groups to choose this book.

From the Publisher
:

A modern love story with a Jane Austen twist.. .

Marine biologist Cassie Boulton has no patience when a modern-day Mr. Darcy appears in her lab on Cape Cod. Proud, aloof Calder Westing III is the scion of a famous political family, while Cassie’s success is hard-won in spite of a shameful family history.

When their budding romance is brutally thwarted, both by his family and by hers, Calder tries to set things right by rewriting the two of them in the roles of Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet from Pride & Prejudice…but will Cassie be willing to supply the happy ending?

My Review:

The Man Who Loved Pride & Prejudice by Abigail Reynolds is a re-release of her original title, Pemberley By the Sea. Readers who like modern day adaptations of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice will probably find the characters of Cassie, Erin, Calder and Scott delightful. Cassie is a marine biologist and Erin is her assistant for the summer at Woods Hole where they meet the very wealthy Scott Dunstan and his chum S. Calder Westing III. Erin and Scott spend a summer inseparable while Cassie and Calder go back and forth in an ambivalent relationship. At the end of the summer Scott ends his relationship with Erin, devastating her while Cassie learns his best friend Calder added him to this conclusion. Reynolds’ modern twist on Pride and Prejudice is an intriguing one, well thought out, brilliant plot and plot twists. I am a purist when it comes to Austen’s Pride and Prejudice and I can say without a doubt I thoroughly enjoyed The Man Who Loved Pride & Prejudice. Reynolds will take the reader through numerous plot twists and turns, leading to a wonderful conclusion. I would recommend this novel to anyone, even to those who are Austen purists such as me.

This tour has a slightly different format. There is one reviewer per book in the Prey series and then answering the same questions for each of the novels.

Days of PREY Tour Questionnaire:

Title and series number of the book you read: Rules of Prey by John Sandford, first in the series.

Year published: First published in July 1989

Tell us about Lucas Davenport: Lucas Davenport is a cop who happens to be quite wealthy, enjoys fine clothes, cars, and woman. He is highly intelligent and often works outside the rules.

What is Lucas doing when he first appears in the book? Set up the scene.
When the reader is first introduced to Lucas Davenport he is being tailed by IAD, buying a Daily Racing Form and has stumbled across an Emily Dickinson book. Davenport firmly believes poetry finds him, he should not search it out. He realises he is under surveillance and makes them wait while leisurely reading his newest book of poetry, eating lunch and then heading to the racetrack.

Give us a sense of time and place. Lucas Davenport lives in Minneapolis and is at the Hennepin County Government Center, which looks exactly as it is described.

Lucas’s occupation or professional role? Detective Lieutenant he also writes detailed and sophisticated role-playing commuter games, which bring in a fortune and allow him to live in such luxury.

Lucas’s personal status (single, dating, married): Lucas is a ladies man and currently single.

Lucas Davenport is a known clothes-horse; did you notice any special fashion references? All the time, Davenport appreciates the finest suits and clothing and is clothing is mentioned frequently.

Let’s talk about the mystery:
Avoiding spoilers, what was the crime/case being solved? A serial killer is on the loose,, however “maddog” is not the typical rapist/murder. He is playing a game, much as one would a chess game, only he is using women’s lives and pitting himself against Lucas Davenport.

Does the title of your book relate to the crime?
Absolutely!

Who was your favorite supporting character, good or evil?
Davenport’s friend Elle. She is witty, knows Davenport well, and profiles for fun.

What was your favorite scene or quote?
My favourite scenes in this novel are between Elle and Davenport. They work quite well with each other.

Finally, how do you envision Lucas Davenport?
If he were to be portrayed in a movie, what celebrity would play him? Lucas Davenport is a handsome, fit, intelligent man who works too hard to compensate for a childhood trauma. He only allows precious few to truly know him. He has a girlfriend, but he is a player, and does not get enough sleep due to working on constructing extremely complex video games while off the clock. I do not know of any celebrities young enough to play Lucas Davenport, which is to say, I watch very little telly or see few movies.

Additional thoughts: I have read every Sandford novel, save his latest release and have enjoyed each novel as they progress and build upon each other. The characters are well described and come to life for the reader. For those not familiar with Minnesota, Sandford does an excellent job describing the scenes, right down to the streets. I used to read Sandford’s articles in the Star-Tribwhen he was a reporter and was thrilled when I discovered his Prey series. I would recommend this series to anyone who enjoys mysteries, his plots are some of the best I have come across.
