Booking Through Thursday, 14 January

Today’s questioned was suuggested by Prairie Progressive:

Do you read the inside flaps that describe a book before or while reading it?

This question I hope, means I am not alone. No, I do not read the inside flap nor do I read the back. I feel both give too much away and I want to experience the book for myself, rather than having some notion of what is going to unfold.

Anyone can play along each Thursday with Booking Through Thursday.

A completely different response than mine but you really got me thinking!

  2. Midday Escapades says:

That's a good point you make. I actually read both before I read the book.

Visiting from SITS. I'm also glad Friday is almost here. Glad your long week is getting much shorter. :0)

  3. Jennifer G. says:

Your answer is similar to mine!

  4. Nise' says:

I do both. We should all try it the other way than our norm!

  5. Novroz says:

I don't think flap gives too much information…so I read them all time.

I am a book-stopper, meaning I'll quit reading books in middle if I find them boring…so the summary on flap/back is my 1st guidance to decide is it my kind of book or not

  6. Marie says:

very different from me- but it's interesting to know. i like to have a little info going in personally. i love your blog by the way and i'm going to follow you & come back! :-)

  7. Alayne says:

Wow, that's definitely unique to me! So how do you know if you're going to want to read a book? :) I just finished my review of The Last Dickens at The Crowded Leaf if you're interested!

  8. Jennifer says:

    Alayne,
Excellent question. I chose my books by a variety of means, authors, genres, word of mouth recommendations, Independent Booksellers suggestions, etc. Somehow I always have more than enough books to read and many turn out to be wonderful gems I may not have otherwise discovered.

  9. jlshall says:

I usually like to know at least a little bit about a book before I give it a try. So I do read the jacket flaps sometimes. But I rely heavily on recommendations from other bloggers, too.

  10. The Muse says:

    I always do… :) :)

Oh wow, not reading the flap or blurb? I could not do that.. Thnx for your comment on my blog. I see you are a knitter too :) Nice!

  13. Alaine - Queen of Happy Endings says:

Really, how do you buy a book then? I do buy books for their covers but most of the time I read the blurb unless I'm buying it based on book reviews. You are right though, sometimes the blurbs give too much away.

  14. Aleksandra says:

    I usually read them! ;)

  15. Bluestocking says:

I don't consider that spoiling though. Here is mine

  16. Ted says:

That's what I do with theatre reviews (I won't read them until after I have seen the play), but not, somehow, with books – even though I try to protect myself from too much plot information!

  17. Melody says:

I'm a flapper, but if I sense there's a spoiler coming on (especially the introduction page), then I'll skip them.

  18. Susan B. Evans says:

I've never thought about not reading the flap or back of the book before I start reading it. Looks like a few agree with you though :) Maybe I'll give it a try sometime.

  19. Amused says:

Wow I am so impressed with your ability to resist the urge to sneak a peak at what might happen!

  20. Aths says:

Interesting response! Like the others, I was also wondering how you decide which book to read. I somehow cannot resist reading the flap. I almost feel like I am jumping into uncertain waters. LOL
