About the Book:

Twelve years ago, renowned physician and author Dr. William Sears was diagnosed with cancer. He, like so many people, wanted-and needed-to take control of his health. Dr. Sears created a comprehensive, science based, head-to-toe program for living a long, fit life-and it worked. Now at the peak of health, Dr. Sears shares his program in PRIME-TIME HEALTH. This engaging and deeply informative book will motivate readers to make crucial behavior and lifestyle changes. Dr. Sears explores how to keep each body system healthy and delay those usual age-related changes.

My Review:

Seventeen years ago my son was born and I turned to Dr. William Sears’ parenting books to help me learn what to do to keep my baby safe, healthy and happy. Today I am pleased to say I am once again turning to Dr. Sears for advise, this time on how I can stay healthy and fit. There is a dizzying array of health and fitness books on the market, most are fads, sorry to say, yet true. I have been searching for a book that would talk to me, explain to me how my muscles and organs work and rely on the health of each other to keep my body functioning as well as staying healthy. Furthermore I wanted sound scientific backing, not the fad of the week. Prime-Time Health is everything I have been looking for and more offering the backing of not only a lifetime of medical experience but also a 12-year study. Dr. Sears along with his wife Martha Sears have put together a solid book on how adults can take better care of themselves. What the reader will not find in this book, thank you Dr. Sears, is any sort of quick weight loss plan. Prime -Time Health goes into great detail covering all aspects of the adult body as well as offering reasonable and sensible tips and suggestions for everyday living. The final chapter is for the reader to use a as template to customize a personal health plan based on the reader’s needs, rather than some generic plan, this book gives the reader all the facts and lets the reader go back and focus on what is relevant to the reader. I cannot praise this book highly enough. From the common sense advise such as eat more often to details of how the human body works, Prime-Time Health is a must have book for anyone truly serious about being healthy and fit for life.

About the Authors:

William Sears, MD, has practiced pediatrics for more than 30 years, and is an associate clinical professor at the University of California, Irvine, School of Medicine. Martha Sears is a registered nurse, childbirth educator, and parenting and health consultant. They are the authors of more than 30 books and live in southern California.

About the Book
:

“Look around,” the drill sergeant said. “In a few years, or even a few months, several of you will be dead. Some of you will be severely wounded or so badly mutilated that your own mother can’t stand the sight of you. And for the real unlucky ones, you will come home so emotionally disfigured that you wish you had died over there.”

It was Week 7 of basic training . . . eighteen years old and I was preparing myself to die.

They say the Army makes a man out of you, but for eighteen-year-old SPC Michael Anthony, this fabled rite of passage is instead a dark and dangerous journey. After obtaining his parents’ approval to enlist at seventeen, Anthony begins this journey with an unshakeable faith in the military based on his family’s long tradition of service. But when he finds himself in a medical unit of misfits as lost as he is, Anthony not only witnesses firsthand the unspeakable horror of war, he experiences the undeniable misconduct of the military. Everything he’s ever believed in dissolves, forcing Anthony to rethink his ideals and ultimately risk his career—and his freedom—to challenge the military that once commanded his loyalty.

This searing memoir chronicles the experiences that change one young soldier forever. A seasoned veteran before the age of twenty-one, he faces the truth about the war—and himself—in this shocking and unprecedented eyewitness account.

My Review:

Mass Casualties is a poignant memoir of a young man’s tour in Iraq, serving as an OR tech in the Army. SPC Michael Anthony’s memoir reads as a personal journal with an open, honest, and raw tone to his memoir. Anthony’s retelling of his year is non-partisan, and while at times heart-wrenching, his memoir serves well as an inside look of a young man before, during, and after serving his time in the Army. Through his tumultuous year filled with the many highs and lows, Anthony is able to make the reader laugh, or at least smile, even under the darkest of circumstances. It is intriguing to watch as Anthony matures and develop throughout the year and how his perceptions change with time and experience. His tone is one of a friend retelling stories of those he served with, making each soldier quite real to the reader. The bonds he had while deployed are well displayed in his memoir and he maintains no illusions that these bonds will carry on when he returns home. Anthony draws the reader further into his life in the Army through his routines in the OR, during the harrowing times in the bunkers when the area is being bombed, as well as through his daily routines. Anthony is quite candid about his fears, concerns and frustrations including his inability to sleep and the lengths he is willing to go to for sleep. Through it all, Anthony manages to keep his sense of humour. Mass Casualties is a powerful memoir, showcasing the day-to-day routine of an Army OR tech struggling to adjust and make it through his tour in Iraq.

About the Author:

Michael Anthony (MA) seemed destined to serve from the day he was born. The youngest of seven children, Michael has four brothers and two sisters, all but one of whom joined the military. His father and two grandfathers were also in the Military.

After graduating high school, he joined the Army Reserves, went through basic training, and then went through job training to become an Operating Room Medic. One year later he returned home and enrolled in college to begin his first semester. Almost immediately upon finishing his first semester he was shipped off to Wisconsin to train for four months before he would leave and spend his next year in Iraq. Michael is now back in the States and working toward a Bachelor’s Degree in creative writing. For more information visit his website.

Booking Through Thursday – Complicated

So, today’s question is in two parts.
1. Do YOU like books with complicated plots and unexpected endings?
2. What book with a surprise ending is your favorite? Or your least favorite?

1. I am a huge fan of complicated books, the more complex the better.

2. My least favourite type is book is one where I can, with a fair degree of accuracy, determine the ending as well as the means to the end, before I am a quarter of the way through the novel.

Anyone can play along each Thursday with Booking Through Thursday.

About the Novel:

SUITED FOR SEDUCTION

Fashion curator Athena Smith will do anything to get her perfectly manicured hands on the Clayworth family’s celebrated couture collection for her exhibit. So when she’s called in to make sure the gowns are the real deal, she’s ecstatic…until a dress she’s examining turns out to be loaded with toxins (talk about killer threads!) and Athena faints, only to wake up face-to-face with the One That Got Away, notorious Chicago bachelor Drew Clayworth.

Drew still believes Athena betrayed him all those years ago, and he’s sure he can’t trust her. But when the priceless gowns go missing, she offers to help track them down. Reluctantly allied in the quest, Drew and Athena are soon stunned by the barely restrained passion still sizzling between them…and memories both bitter and sweet. Is their new partnership just a business arrangement? Or is this something more than…

A BLACK TIE AFFAIR

My Review:

The Black Tie Affair takes the reader inside the fashion world of Chicago through this light and flirty romance novel. We meet Athena Smith, a fashion curator, as she attempts to procure the Clayworth’s gowns for her own museum exhibit. Athena falls ill during the viewing of the gowns and viola Drew Clayworth appears at her bedside side, albeit not trusting Athena, due to an unpleasant history between the two, yet needs her help to find the missing Clayworth gowns. The more Athena and Drew work together to unravel the mystery and locate the gowns, the greater the romantic tension builds and their old feelings for each other resurface.
The Black Tie Affair was novel I did not enjoy as much as I had hoped. While it should have been a quick and delightful read, I found myself trudging through the book. I was rather uninterested in the lives of either of the main characters, although the plot twists added a delightful diversion from the almost too predictable steamy romance that was inevitable. I was most intrigued with the secrecy surrounding Athena’s father, which was never resolved. For that matter, several questions remained unanswered, I presume to leave room for sequels, which I am certain Bodine fans will enjoy. Bodine’s novel is a quick read and one that is certain to delight those who enjoy a well-written steamy romance novel.

About the Author:

Sherrill Bodine has been writing stories since junior high, when she won a pair of silver skates in a state-wide essay contest. While moving twenty-two times back and forth across America and rearing her four children, she published fifteen award-winning novels under two pseudoynyms (Lynn Leslie/Leslie Lynn). Now she’s decided to be herself and write about the people, parties, and high-life in the city she knows best: Chicago. When she’s not in the Windy City with her husband, family, and Newfoundland and pug dogs, she’s fulfilling her passion to travel to exotic locales around the world.

A Book Review: Lone Star Legend by Gwendolyn Zepeda

About the Book:

When Sandy Saavedra lands her dream job with the popular website ¡Latino Now!, she can’t wait to write hard-hitting pieces to combat all those stupid Latino stereotypes. While visions of Pulitzers dance in her head, her editor in chief is suddenly laid off, replaced by the infamous Dolores Villanueva O’Sullivan. Dolores has one mission: make ¡Latino Now! an internet phenomenon, no matter how many pandering puff pieces she has to pack onto its pages. Sandy doesn’t see how she can keep this job without losing her soul, especially when she’s sent to Middle-of-Nowhere Texas to investigate the dumbest legend her people ever created, the Chupacabra. She fears she’s about to fail an assignment-and lose her job-until she meets Tío Jaime, a grandfatherly hermit who might be crazy, or might be the best thing that ever happened to Sandy’s career.

My Review:

Gwendolyn Zepeda delivers a delightful and witty novel filled with a brilliant ensemble of characters in Lone Star Legend. Dominga Saavedra’s dream is to be a serious journalist when she learns the magazine she works for has been sold to Levy Media, a internet gossip site, and she will now be working for the Nacho Papi Website writing snarky comments about celebrities. If that was not enough, her personal life is falling apart and as she blogs about her woes on her private blog, My Modern TragiComedy, she learns just how public even anonymous blogging can be. Sandy, the name Dominga goes by, suddenly is faced with her personal life colliding with her career. Nacho Papi’s ratings steadily climb and a cable television section is added. Throughout all the turmoil, good or bad, there has been one constant in Sandy’s life, her weekly visits with Tio Jaime. Suddenly Sandy is noticed everywhere she goes and every action scrutinized. Will she be able to handle her newly discovered fame as well as reconcile her conscience and mend her tumultuous relationships?
Gwendolyn Zepeda narrates a novel in which Dominga Saavedra comes into her own with the help of Tio Jaime. The characters are very likeable and easy to identify with. Even though I am almost old enough to be Sandy’s mum, I did not have too much trouble identifying with Sandy. The struggles Sandy encounters along the way are realistic, especially in today’s society, she is young, naïve, and wanting to make a name for herself. Lone Star Legend is a wonderfully charming and uplifting novel interspersed with several life lessons for the young and those who may need a reminder to follow their dreams and live.
